Championship - Davies set for Forest job

Eurosport - Thu, 01 Jan 12:03:00 2009

Nottingham Forest are in talks with Billy Davies about the vacant manager's job.

FOOTBALL Former Manager Derby Manger Billy Davies - 0

Representatives of the Scot claim a deal has already been reached with the Championship club, with a contract set to be signed imminently, but Forest are still giving little away.

"Nottingham Forest have today (Wednesday) confirmed that they have entered into negotiations with Billy Davies as their preferred candidate to take over as manager," read a statement on the club's website.

Davies has been out of work since leaving Derby in November 2007, but has plenty of experience of life in the second tier.

Before taking charge at Pride Park he enjoyed a successful spell at Preston, while he began his coaching career in impressive fashion at Motherwell.

Should he be named as the new boss at the City Ground then he will step into the void left by his countryman Colin Calderwood, who was sacked on Boxing Day.

Whether a man with strong Derby connections will be welcomed with open arms across the East Midlands divide remains to be seen, especially as former Forest favourite Nigel Clough was believed to be in the running for the post.

Should Davies complete the formalities of his proposed move to the City Ground in the next few days, his first task will be to prepare his new side for a trip to Manchester City.

Forest face the Premier League side in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday, hoping to put their domestic woes behind them.

A 3-2 victory against Norwich on Sunday did lift the Reds out of the relegation zone, but there is still a lot of work to be done before the club can be assured of their Championship standing for next season.

  1. In response to Spoddery..you haven't got any support! A city the size of Nottingham should be getting close to 30,000....you average around 20,000. 12 miles down the road a much smaller city [large town really] gets nearly 30,000, but Derby have real support and is a PROPER footballing hotbed.
Davies will be a failure and you'll be back in the 3rd division. The mighty Rams will hopefully get Incy, Keano or young Cloughie and be back in the prem in 2 years time. Happy New Year to all and especially THE SHEEPSHAG ARMY....Ilson and Heanor.

  2. Why are the Forest board turning our beloved club into a circus? Having just got rid of one clown they are contemplating employing another, and an ex rams failure to boot. Is there no one on the board with the forethought to bring someone with imagination and energy to take us forward and back in the Premiership where we belong? Why has the young Ferguson at Peterboro not been considered? He has done a terrific job there with very little funding and would be worth a gamble in my opinion.

  3. And what's the panic? Take your time. Leave Pemberton in charge for a couple of games and see what happens. The performance against Norwich was a good one. Cerytainly better than any of Calderwood's or Derby under Davies.

  4. Oh please no!!! More agony in store for Forest supporters. Nothing will change until Doughty goes. He wouldn't know a good manager if it bit him in the arse.

  12. It is patently obvious the problem at Forest is not the manager. We need a football brain at the helm not a man of wealth alone, has he learnt nothing over many managerial mistakes, sorry Mr. Doughty. Forest was a footballing club, we played on grass once upon a time we do not want Route One.
Happy New Year and Best Wishes for 2009. Dave (Stamford)

  13. So this is the way forward for Forest? A great big backward step in my opinion. Yes he got Derby into the Premiership but failed miserably to keep them there. Where has he been and what has he done since leaving Derby, more importantly, who has employed him? Answers; NOWHERE, NOTHING AND NO-ONE. Obviously an unpopular bloke with no ambition. A similar frame of mind seems to exist within the Forest Board at the moment - perhaps they've had too much Sherry over the Christmas period and thy'll wake up in a couple of years when we're looking for yet another manager. When will these decision makers eventually listen to the fans - Nottingham Forest will lose support if this appointment goes through. What an absolute nightmare. On a more positive note, Happy New Year everyone.
