Team GB's triple gold medallist Chris Hoy leads the sportsmen and women on the Queen's New Year honours list after being given a knighthood.
Hoy became the country's most successful Olympian at a single Games for 100 years and was voted Sports Personality of the Year earlier in December.
The Scot is joined by the rest of Great Britain's victorious Olympians on the New Year list, as well as Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton.
McLaren man Hamilton, 23, became the youngest driver to win the crown in November in only his second season.
The first black driver in F1, Hamilton has been awarded an MBE.
Britain's Olympics squad won a fresh haul of honours after finishing an impressive fourth in the Beijing medals table.
As well as Hoy's knighthood there were awards for double gold-winning swimmer Rebecca Adlington (OBE), 400 metres champion Christine Ohuruogu (MBE), double cycling gold winner Bradley Wiggins (CBE) and sprint cycling champion Victoria Pendleton (MBE).
There were also honours for Olympic sailing gold medallists Ben Ainslie (CBE), Sarah Ayton (OBE) and Sarah Webb (OBE).
Fourteen-year-old Paralympic swimmer Eleanor Simmonds was made an MBE after winning two golds in Beijing, becoming the youngest person to be honoured by the royal family.

I know scientists who spend their life working to cure cancer and AIDS, and get zero recognition and very little money. Hoy gets a knighthood for cycling round in circles quickly (for his own glory). He may well be a nice bloke, but society has odd values.
im happy for hoy so shut the hell up
mark
this boddo mans right steven gerrad should have his mbe taken
To that walkingsex moron who puts down Kelly Holmes for only being a Sargeant in the army. Want rank did you have Napoleon???
Happy New Year! I'm an open minded girl from US, I'm interested in exotic things, photography, dating and sports...I have my photos on --- Tallhub Co m ---, I love tall guys!
Do you love traveling and have some experience? Just find me out.
No the Queen does not pick the honours winners, she had nothing to do with picking them. It used to be the PM, but they kept giving Knighthoods to Labour Party financial donors, now they are proposed by independant committee.
For the person in Korea running a nursery for underprivelaged kids, if you are British citizen you can get an Honours award. Today anybody can if they are proposed by someone local. Not so long ago a lady who holds a yellow pole to stop traffic when schoolkids cross the road won an OBE because the local community said she had been doing it for years, was always happy and smiling and the kids loved her. So all your going on about class is trash. Why would a labour government keep giving gongs to conservatives? Dame Kelly Holmes was a sergaent in the army. Real class huh?
That Hoy guy was given a knighthood much too soon. Should have waited to see if the continued to help young cyclists or something like that when he retires like Seb Coe did for all sports and Steve Redgrave, somehow you can see that they deserved it over a longer period of time
We can all run, jump and throw but can we perform these skills as well as an olympian? No we can't. Try and ride a bike as fast as Chris Hoy, you wouldn't even get near him. Chris doesn't have a social life he puts his body and mind under constant pressure to the extent that when he finishes his training he literally falls on the floor unable to move. He hasn't just trained for a few years, this is over 12 years of gradualy improving. He has helped with others to put UK sport back on the map and deserves his knighthood. Not only has he achieved 3 gold medals in one olypics, but he also interviews as a professional unlike some sports people who are keen to show their latest fashion accessory off! Having said that there are many other unsung heroes in all walks of life that equally deserve an honour. Instead of knocking true sporting greats, acknowledge their part in making us proud to be British and THEN look at other issues such as war and charity under a different heading. I respect Chris and I respect our servicemen abroad.
Hoy getting a Sir? Well perhaps later but not yet, though he deserved a gong at the Hamilton level. Hoy probably got a knighthood as a sop to the Scottish Labour vote with one eye on the next general election. I'd like to see how he'd have fared using a bike from Halfords.
I live in Korea. I own a small kindergarten school and work along side four employees (including my fiancee) to teach English, Math and Science to under priveleged children. I'm 28 years old, where's my knighthood?
I agree the sports people work hard and give up a lot of thier lives for the glory they seek, albeit for thier themselves. What about all the service personnel who have been killed doing thier job to make the world a better place who never get a mention. Winning medals is one thing, fighting for a just cause and dying.................
I have been on my FEAT for 64 years do i get a medal? No ithink there is more chance the world is going to melt.HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Personally, I think these awards are given out to anybody nowadays, especially if you have money, talk with a plum in your mouth or are Conservative! It's a shame because some of these Sportspeople deserve some recognition. On the Lewis Hamilton front, it's good to see that some people remember he is of mixed race but that should not come into the equation. He's British and a Formula 1 Driver. Does it matter he's got a dark complexion? I fear not all people will see it like that though - Bob Marley was also mixed race! Hmmmm.
Zehst wrote "WTF Chris Hoy most successful British Olympian on a BICYCLE!!!!!!!!!!!! Gets a knighthood WTF? But Lewis Hamilton first black f1 driver, youngest ever winner of the championship in a sport that u could die in a split second infact one of the most dangerous sports in the world only gets a MBE. Chris Hoy done great but it is only cycling. Compare the talents of Lewis to Chris Hoy who do u think is better?@
Put lewis in a @#$% car and see how talented he is.
English Queen awards are @#$% ! She picks who she fancies, too many greats achievements forgotten not to be considered a bias nonsense. The best award of all, as always, will be TIME. Time will tell if your achievements are worth remembering. As for Hamilton, driving a super car and being given all sorts of awards left right and center shows that the culture of personality is more important than the culture of true achivement.
and yes, i can't spell
kae j - don't worry, the way "UK" is going at the moment you'll be knighted for being a bigotted fu$$wit.
happy new year
