Lappin relishing 'Well chance

Motherwell newcomer Simon Lappin is desperate to kick-start his career at Fir Park after hearing glowing reports about the Lanarkshire side. The former St Mirren midfielder has signed on loan until the end of the season after losing his first-team spot at Norwich.

Lappin will have to wait for his debut, after the Scottish Cup fifth-round tie against Dundee was rescheduled for Tuesday with the Fir Park pitch still waterlogged.

But he knows exactly how well Mark McGhee's side have been doing as they sit fourth in the SPL with games in hand on every team.

The 25-year-old said: "I watch them on the television whenever they are on, and I get the Scottish papers down there, and by all accounts they are playing some excellent attacking football. That's the way I like to play.

"They have some great players and have had a great season so far, so I am thoroughly looking forward to being part of it and hopefully I can add to that as well.

"I'm looking forward to working with the manager and all the boys, and get back playing. I can't wait to get started."

Lappin moved to Carrow Road on the final day of last year's transfer window and made 33 appearances for the Championship side.

But he last played on November 10, dropping out of the side shortly after manager Peter Grant was replaced by Glenn Roeder.

"I'm an ambitious guy and once I got the chance to go down there I was obviously going to take it," he said. "I always wanted to play at that level."

But he added: "When the new manager came in, things changed. Unfortunately I went out of the team and sat out for two or three months.

"I played a couple of games under him [Roeder] but unfortunately it wasn't in my preferred position.

"The left-back there, Adam Drury, had a knee injury so I was happy to fill in at left-back until he got someone in.

"And when he did, I didn't get a chance at left midfield. So it was disappointing that he has not really seen me play in my preferred position."

Lappin is focused on impressing at Motherwell but he hopes the Canaries take note.

"I'm totally committed to Motherwell for the loan spell," he said.

"I've got another year down there and I will go back there in the summer.

"I would like to think they will be sending people up to watch how I am progressing here.

"I just wanted to get back playing, but I learned a lot down there, it's a very tough, physical league with a lot of good players.

"So I would like to think I have improved my game, training with players like Dion Dublin and Darren Huckerby and someone like (Rob) Earnshaw when he was there.

"You can't help but learn when you are playing with guys like that."

However, McGhee hopes Lappin will stay beyond this season.

"He can play left side of midfield, centre midfield, left-back at a push, so he gives us a slightly different type of player than we have," the Motherwell boss said.

"He gives us a nice bit of balance and I look forward to seeing what he is going to bring to the squad.

"I would hope he would come here, do well and would want to stay."
