Australian Open - Federer rues lost chances

World number two Roger Federer lamented what could have been after he lost a thrilling five-set final to Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open.

Federer was seeking a record-equalling 14th Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park but ran into a tenacious Nadal who pipped him to the title 7-5 3-6 7-6 3-6 6-2.

"This is one of the matches in my career where I feel like I could have or should have won," a glum-looking Federer, who also lost a classic five-set final at Wimbledon to Nadal last July, said.

"But you can't go through your whole life as a tennis player taking every victory that's out there.

"You've got to live with those (defeats) but they hurt even more so like if you're that close, like at Wimbledon or like here at the Australian Open.

"So that's what's tough about it. But I have no regrets so it's all right."

Federer, who had hoped to equal Pete Sampras's record of 14 Grand Slam titles, converted just six of 19 break opportunities.

"I had, I guess, many chances," he said. "I mean, I was up a break in the first (set) twice.

"Yeah I had many chances. I missed them and they cost me dearly."

Federer also produced a poor service game, making just 52 percent of his first serves, and admitted it was a key factor in the game.

"I won a set against Rafa serving, what, 30 percent first serves?" he said.

"I got a great second serve (which is) very reliable normally (and) I hit some stupid double faults, but that's going to happen in a five set match usually.

"I tried to kind of get the grip on my serve but never really found the rhythm, which was a pity.

"It was a tough match. I don't think I served particularly well and I think that was the key to the match in the end."

  1. i think it's not destroying the winning ceremony..hmm.. even nadal 'the CHAMPS' respect fed for that, i think that's how the sportsmanship.. but i keep asking in my minf why there're such people who say 'u're destroying the ceremony..blahblah....do not be selfish fed!'??

  2. OFCOURSE NADAL SHOULD HAVE RESPECT FOR ROGER BECOS HE MIGHT NOT ACHIEVE WHAT FEDERER HAS ACHIEVED IN TENNIS,REMBR HOW LONG FEDERER HAD THE NUMBER ONE SPOT FOR,AND ALSO REMBR HW MANY SLAMS HE HAS WON,AND HE IS RATED AS THE GREATEST PLAYER OF ALL TIME!! SO THERE MUST STILL BE A SIGN OF RESPECT FOR HIM,IF AM NADAL I WILL ALWAYS RESPECT ROGER ANYWHERE I SEE HIM,COS THE GUY IS A GREAT CHAMP AND A HERO

  3. (From Rude God Post 52) People still saying that Federer should retire; ridiculous. He's made the final of the last 4 grand slams and is head and shoulders above everyone else except for Nadal. I don't think Roger Federa should retire, maybe toughen up a bit. But that head and shoulders comment is the most blinkered comment I've read, Andy Murray is beating Federa consistantly and beating him well, the younger players have Roger's game sussed they know if they just hang in he will make twice as many unforced errors than any the other top players. Toughen up stop making mistakes and get back to number 1 Roger. Oh and stop crying like a big girl.

  4. Oh Roger, you are such a hearbreaker, but we still love your game, you were very close to win it, 12 breakpoints in one match? unbelievable, but its useless to think about it now. Hope you will win again soon. Very well Done Rafa, you started to win our hearts with your amazing sportsmanship and humble attitude. Vamos Rafa.

  5. I have no problem with Federer crying at the ceremony, and I don' t think it ruined anything for Nadal. After the ceremony I really started respecting Nadal even more than I did before, having seen how he understood the moment and didn't go all crazy celebrating in front of the devastated Federer. I think this was the most painful loss of his career, last year's French Open a distant second. If you look how he reacted to the Wimbledon loss, you will see that he was not dissapointed at all, he knew he fought hard, he showed his courage there coming back in hopeless situations, had no regrets over the match. This loss hurts a lot more because there is a lot of things to regret, despite what he said in the aftermatch interview. He was very bitter in the interview ("I wish I was a lefty like him" just one example), but I can understand it just after such a loss. I think Federer needs a change of perspective, some person (couch) that can change his attitude coming into the games with Nadal, because when he plays him you feel he always has a monkey on his back that slows him down.

  6. Federer needs to change his tactics against nadal for sure. But i think its only a matter of time before he gets his 14 grandslams or maybe even surpass sampras record. goodluck fed!

  11. The match maybe was exciting but only because of a bad feeling I got about Federer's performance since the first set loss. If he'd taken the third set I believe he could win but after that tiebreak loss I somehow knew he is not going to do so.

  12. I wanted Federer to win, the match was amazing, I was very exited all through. Go Roger you'll win the next time I'm sure! He's great. But Rafa was also great for his sportsmanship. I liked how he spoke about Fed showing respect. Thanks guys, U R so marvelous.

  14. Roger can take a lot out of this match. If he'd got thumped, mentally it would have been very tough to come back. But he had his chances and knows he can beat Nadal. Nerves let his first serve down, coupled with the fact that Nadal is probably faster than Linford Christie over ten yards, meaning extra pressure to put the ball away early.
All the best Roger, you'll get the record, just keep trying.

  18. I am not a fan of either Rafa or Federer...I am enjoying their battles. I must admit though that I was cheering for Rafa yesterday. Just wanted him to add an Australian Open. After all, he won ALL his Grand Slams having to overcome one of the best if not the best player in history!!! So, when he says he's unlucky that he has to play Roger every time, he's genuine. But that makes his victories more meangingful:)))))

As far as Roger crying is concerned...I don't really understand. If he's cool...then people complain he's a robot...if he has emotions, people complain he doesn't behave like a man. Come on, guys!!!
