World number one Roger Federer became just the fifth man in history to win four Australian Opens when he beat fifth seed Andy Murray 6-3 6-4 7-6(11).
Federer, who is also the first father to win a Grand Slam since Andre Agassi won in Melbourne in 2003, joins Roy Emerson, Agassi, Jack Crawford and Ken Rosewall in lifting the Norman Brookes Trophy four times.
The win in Melbourne also means Federer has increased his Grand Slam record to 16 titles.
Murray had been attempting to become the first British man to triumph in a Grand Slam since Fred Perry in 1936, but in a repeat of the 2008 US Open final, he was once again out-played by Federer.
Going into the match, Murray had dropped just one set, to Croatian 14th seed Marin Cilic in the semi-finals, but Federer dismantled Murray in the first two sets before coming from 5-2 down to force a third set tie-break.
Despite pressure from Murray, the world number one finally sealed the win in two hours and 41 minutes when the Brit slapped a backhand into the net.
Federer was quick to pounce on a nervous start from Murray, breaking in just the second game with a blistering forehand winner straight down the line.
The Brit was quick to bounce back, breaking back in the very next game with a whipped forehand passing shot, before trading service holds with the top seed.
But Federer broke again into the eighth game with another forehand winner, this time firing the ball inside out across court, before easing through the service hold that sealed the first set after 43 minutes.
The early stages of the second set followed much the same pattern, with Federer breaking for the lead in the third game; battering consecutive forehand winners over the net before sealing it when Murray hit into the net off the backhand wing.
The Scot battled well not to concede a second break of serve, saving multiple break points in his next two service games, but Federer had already done enough and brought up three set points with his seventh ace of the match before sealing it with a forehand volley winner on the second.
Murray upped his level considerably in the third set, earning himself a break point in just the second game of the set, before eventually breaking in the fifth with a whipped forehand passing shot winner across court.
But Federer broke back when it really counted, when Murray was serving for the set at 5-3, drilling a forehand return of serve winner across court and on to the line before sealing it when Murray dumped a backhand into the net.
The players then traded service holds before Federer held once again, with an ace out wide, to force the decisive tie-break.
The 22-year-old Scot raced out to a 3-1 lead and looked to be heading towards a fourth set and even held five set points in a topsy turvy breaker.
But Federer withstood all the pressure, including squandering his first two championship points, and eventually sealed the win on his third attempt when Murray's backhand down the line caught the top of the tape and failed to go over.

Totally crashed Murray.
Jude..i didnt get to see any of his matches though.. i caught the Verdasco vs Davydenko match and Serena vs aussie girl Stosur... "aussie aussie aussie... oi oi oi..". lol weren't they in for a shocker lol..
Brian No.605 i was just saying Federer was the best suited for the role cause he represents class and Rolex is about class.. i don't however agree with undermining any other player.
Jude No.584.. howdy mate.. you noticed that too did you... rafa's confidence went up dramatically during the tournament... you could just him going for his shots and yes, unfortunate he withdrew in the end.. For anyone who wants acurate updates on Rafa, his next tournament or his injuries.. rafa's made it simple for us.. join his page on Facebook.. he updates it regularly... yesterday's said he's waiting for results...etc... cheers.
First - sorry for my language - I'm from Poland :-)
Second - I can't understand how people can compare Roger and Rafa.
It is true that Rafa is great tennis player and beat Roger few times. But 2008 - 2009 Rafa was in his best form ( maybe top form ever ) and Roger wasn't. Roger is only human and "should" has be beaten sametimes....for his motivation and people who love tennis. Marray, Delpo, Djoko can beat Roger too, but only if Roger isn't in his best.
Real secret of greatness is....consistently win matches when You aren't in Your best form. THAT CAN "ONLY" ROGER FEDERER !!!!!!! I sow live Rafa's press conferencse after match with Andy and he said that during 2 sets against Andy he played his best !!! So we can't say that Rafa was beaten becouse was injured. Nadal is only human too, but he hasn't abilities to win when he isn't in his best.
When Roger is in "his" best form NOBADY can beat him becouse this is tennis from another planet.
I really wish Rafa all the best but I think that now is more mental problem than his kness
Federer the greatest......Nadal the king of Clay......Murray a mole in the hole....

MK DAMODARAN
who cares, hes just another loud mouthed scott, that hates the english.do not care if he never wins another thing in his life.
After wining this AO, Federer has not only tie Agassi's record of 4 AO titles but he has now shared another record with Sampras and Borg - 8 straight yrs with at least one GS title. I am sure he will break both of these tie record next yr.
Federer has won back all 3 GS titles in a row (French, Wimbleton, Aussie) which he had once lost to Nadal, though he did not achieve this by defeating Nadal in the 3 finals .... as Nadal had problems to make any final which is his own problem (due to the way he played his game which could only bring him short-term success...). The next 3 GS this yr will remain a great challenge to Federer :
- To beat Nadal in French Open (may not be in the final as Nadal has lost his #2 ranking)
- Win his record tying 7th Wimbleton title
- Win back the US Open title
Any of one these will be already a great further achievement for Federer, though if he can accomplish all three, he will have achieved the calendar Grand Slam (a bonus) which as Federer as said he has no pressure to have to push himself to achieve this.
Federer handled last yr US Open defeat in a much better way than his last AO defeat. He has changed and realize it is not a must for him to have to win everything to prove himself, as he does not need to ~ not anymore as he has won enough and already reached the top of the mountain. It is just up to him about how long he like to stay up there while the other younger boys are still trying hard to climb up. It is smart for him not to let the media to put the pressure of winning a calendar grandslam on his shoulder. He knows very well the other younger top players are all very good now and he himself could play a good match here but not so well in another tournament as a human being in all yr long. But I guess when Federer could feel more relax now without too much burden to have to win more, he is more dangerous than ever and this is scary to other players
Murali I won't be quick to say that Nadal has the pressure of getting the slam i.e all four slams in his resume... too many assumptions bro. lol
People dont you just love the Rolex advert... classy..they chose the best sportsman to do it for them... nice!
if only he'd grow the hell up and STOP lookin at his momma after every point in desperation...seriously, the mommy boy has to look up for anything and everything, including challenges, nappie change, slam a racket....gees, if they stop mamma from comin to the matches, this poor sucker would just QUIT
P S, reed on weeds next article : MURRAY was real no.1 in that match and would have beaten Fed .... if only they were playing a best of 9 sets
That's for all you nimrods who thought Murray would win. Ha ha ha!!! What a joke all those comments before the final. I think everyone forgot that Murray was playing against the best ever!!! A tennis lesson yet again for Andy, he should start paying Roger for those. He he he.
Simon Reed's next article headline will be
THE OFFICIAL NUMBER ONE thrashed "THE TRUE NUMBER ONE"
@ coolworld - Congratulations :)))
He never seizes to amaze me. I really believed it was possible that this was the one for Murray. I am so proud and pleased. Cheers.
I think even a fit Nadal can't beat Fed at this time as he did when Fed was under pressure of breaking all time GS record. Now Fed has no pressure similar to Nadal when he beat Fed. If Fed is lucky enough he would get a chace to meet Nadal, who by the way lost his body in process of dethroning Fed no 1 ranking, in all three remaining slams this year.
Perhaps Andy Murray peaked too soon, and left his best tennis on court a few days earlier: against Rafa?
He wouldn't be the first bloke who's found himself eventually running on empty after defeating "The King of Clay".
The Commentators seemed to be in general agreement that even if Murray had won the 3rd set: he was finished physically, and thus would almost certainly still have lost the match regardless.
If he had played much more aggressively, and imaginatively he could have taken Federer out of his comfort zone worried, and fatigued him enough to make this far more of an even match, and maybe made history (The 1st British man to win a Grand Slam singles title for 74 years, etc.....)?
Federer may have been unbeatable today irrespective of whatever Murray did out there, but given the fact that Murray clearly didn't go all out for glory......I guess we'll never know eh?
Only a fit & healthy Nadal could have endured Federer today, and up for more. Murray is simply not anywhere this sort of league in terms of physical fitness stamina mental strength & stamina.
If Nadal is somehow able to recover physically; mentally, and technically to the level (or above) where he used to be; del Potro keeps on improving, and Federer maintains his present imperial level of Tennis speed; agility; focus, and play, then I personally think that Andy Murray could find himself waiting indefinitely for Grand Slam glory.
Only time (as ever!) will truly tell!
It is often said that True Champions are born, rather than made. Obviously Roger Federer falls into the former category; as does Rafael Nadal, and perhaps also does Juan Martin del Potro?
As for Andy Murray......I think the Jury is still out: with regards to whether he is the former, or will eventually become the latter?
The fact that Murray was reduced today to a physical; mental & emotional wreck: after being made to look silly as he vainly chased Grand Slam glory, not only perfectly illustrates what it actually takes to overcome a player competitor of the sheer class & genius of Roger Federer....but also just how amazing Rafael Nadal has been for being the only person on earth able to live with beat Federer consistently during his Grand Slam history - especially in breaking Federer's near invincible winning run at Wimbledon!
By the same token, the same can be said for the extraordinary single feat of del Potro in slaying The Federer U.S. Open devouring Monster with such courage; conviction, and heavenly inspiration.
Murray may have won many new fans today: because of his touching show of heartfelt emotion - which presumably highlights his burning ambition to win a BIG ONE, but he needs to realize that going toe-to-toe with Roger, and even outplaying him for a few games will never be enough to beat him.....unless of course Federer has a bit of an off day.
Murray need to find a way somehow, of being able to relax; focus; generate a sustained top quality of play, and intensity of competitivity for at least 3 out of 5 sets for 2 whole weeks, IF he is to eventually become the best.
Nadal definitely was, and maybe still is capable of this feat; as was is del Potro.
For me personally, Murray doesn't quite have what it takes to be a Grand Slam Champion just yet; but could very soon have: if he is patient, and allows himself to reach maturity.
Yes Murray is a good player but I don't understand why people say he's so fit, he is not fit, he is not a best of 5 for 2 weeks fit, not just mentally but also physically, in less than 3 sets he was wincing and holding his right leg and having trouble stopping and pivoting...even if he'd won the 3rd set, he couldn't have actually played through the 4th.
despite the quality of his tennis (and I'm not denying that it's excellenet) I doubt he would have even made it to the final if he had had some 4 or 5 set matches earlier in the tournament.
