Criticism drives Bates on

Leeds chairman Ken Bates insists chants of "Bates out" at Elland Road only make him more determined to achieve success at the club.

Several hundred fans launched an angry protest against his leadership ahead of the recent home game with Ipswich following the sale of former skipper Jonny Howson, while anti-Bates chants were heard again during Tuesday night's 4-1 home defeat to Birmingham.

But in his programme notes ahead of the game Bates, 80, said: "That in itself gives me more determination, more determination to achieve greater ambitions.

"I should explain that I first heard that chant on the day I arrived in this world. Being an awkward cuss even in those days, I was a bit reluctant to make my entry on to the world stage and my mum was having a somewhat slow delivery.

"Back then there was none of the modern technology there is today and the midwife and nurses were verbally urging her on.

"Thus it was at the moment I arrived, the first chanting I heard was `Bates out!' as the staff urged my mother on. So, consequently, the current chanting is water off a duck's back."

  3. pretty clear grayson was going, bates had no intention of spending any money this january on a manager he knew he would sack, grayson probably knew as well but why should he walk and forfeit the balance of his contract. people often talk about loyalty from footballers but clubs are not loyal when they want to get rid of someone, including managers. good luck grayson, you were well aware of the defence problem but did not or was not able to sort it with players that were available for free.

  4. Bates seems to be ignorant, arrogant & selfish. He obviously doesn't give a toss about how the ordinary Leeds supporter feels. I actually do feel sorry for you Leeds fans, from a Foxes fan.
