Crawley manager Steve Evans has revealed he pleaded with striker Matt Tubbs to stay moments before he signed for Bournemouth.

The talismanic forward netted 58 times in 80 appearances for the Red Devils but chose to make the step up to npower League One when the Cherries made a move for him.

Evans told Crawley's official website: "I suppose I knew deep down for a couple of months that it would be very hard to keep hold of Tubbsy in the transfer window, but it was not until a few minutes before he signed his forms did I know for certain.

"We have rejected numerous offers for him but he was at the stage where he wanted to move on and collect the rewards that go with a move.

"I tried in vain to keep him, even speaking to him minutes before he signed, but it was not to be.

"I do not mind admitting that we both shed a tear and acknowledged we would like to work with each other again in the future."
