Field Mill capacity temporarily cut

Tue 01 Apr, 12:00 PM

Mansfield have had the capacity at their Field Mill stadium temporarily reduced to just 4,684 by the Safety Advisory Group. The move follows the resignation of the club's chairman and safety certificate holder James Derry on Friday and the appointment of his successor, town mayor Tony Egginton.

Under the terms of the 1975 Safety at Sports Grounds Act, Nottinghamshire County Council has an obligation to review the capacity as a result of any new person being proposed as the general safety certificate holder.

Mansfield have been offering discounted tickets in a bid to attract a bumper crowd for Tuesday night's crucial League Two relegation clash against Wrexham, and chief executive Stephen Booth has described the move as a "slap in the face" for the struggling club.

In a statement Booth said: "I am extremely disappointed by the decision of S.A.G (Safety Advisory Group) to temporarily reduce capacity at Field Mill as a result in change of general safety certificate holder.

"I am bemused by the suggestion that the change of safety certificate holder could in any way impact on the safety of the general public. The club has been in discussion with the Football League regarding this matter and they are equally bemused. In my opinion, this is a slap in the face."
