Gretna are Fir Park tenants again

Tue 01 Apr, 05:45 PM

Gretna will return to Motherwell's Fir Park stadium to play Saturday's Scottish Premier League fixture against Inverness Caledonian Thistle. The fixture itself had been placed in doubt following fresh fears over the immediate future of the administration-hit club.

But Gretna have secured a switch of venue from Livingston's Almondvale Stadium, which is likely to ease their costs.

Gretna hosted Celtic at Livingston on March 23 after ongoing pitch problems at Fir Park forced a switch from their temporary home.

But Motherwell played Hibernian there following remedial work on the surface last week and Saturday's fixture has been switched back to Lanarkshire.

The move is good news for Gretna as Motherwell promised to charge only a nominal fee for rent when the club fell into administration.

The SPL had earlier confirmed the match would go ahead after holding emergency talks over the club's cash crisis.

Reports claimed Gretna's administrators, insolvency firm Wilson Field, had set a deadline for a takeover and could pull the plug on the club.

However, an SPL spokesman said: "A meeting was held with the SPL board and the basic aim was to review the position of Gretna.

"We agreed to continue to monitor the position of the club going forward.

"We are in very close contact with the administrators and will stay in regular contact."

Wilson Field had been expected to make an announcement this afternoon but instead directed enquiries towards the SPL.

Despite being given an advance in fees by the SPL, they have faced massive difficulties in running a club who were bankrolled to the tune of around £8million by Brooks Mileson, who withdrew his funding following illness in February.

They were relegated with a 2-0 defeat at St Mirren on Saturday, days after administrators made 22 players and seven more backroom staff redundant.

But their demise ahead of this weekend's split would have given the SPL a massive headache over the points situation.

The SPL have refused to speculate on the strategy should Gretna fold, but taking away the points won during the season would have a huge bearing on both the race for Europe and the final top-six place.

Dundee United would move well ahead of Motherwell and Hibernian in third place having lost twice to Gretna, while Aberdeen's rivals for a top-six place, Hearts and Falkirk, have also dropped points against the Black and Whites.

As well as the Inverness game, Gretna have an outstanding home match against St Mirren, who cannot make the top six.

Meanwhile, the club today admitted they could not fulfil the rest of their reserve fixtures.

They sit bottom of the SPL reserve league with six games left, but with just 20 players remaining at the club they were unable to play a scheduled match at Inverness and do not intend to field a reserves side again this season.
