As far as top managers go, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is as frugal as they come.
After signing Andrei Arshavin for a club record £15 million in January, the general feeling was that the purse strings would be firmly pulled tight again for another few years while he groomed the latest Gunners golden generation.
However, both the Daily Mirror and the Daily Express have gone big on the story that Wenger is targeting Blackburn Rovers striker Roque Santa Cruz for a summer move to the Emirates.
Manchester City have long been linked with a move for the Paraguayan, but if The Independent's reports that they are focused on snaring Valencia's David Villa for £35m are correct, then Arsenal could pull off another shrewd acquisition.
There are no quotes - not even from unnamed insiders or loudmouth agents - but both papers agree that Santa Cruz could leave Rovers for a good deal less than the £18m sum that would trigger a release clause in his contract.
With Carlos Tevez headed for the Old Trafford exit door bound for who-knows-where, Alex Ferguson will turn to Lyon's Karim Benzema as his replacement.
The striker has become something of a talisman for Lyon over the past few seasons, and is possibly the biggest star in the French league - although that's an accolade akin to being the best alpine skier in Fiji.
According to The Sun, United boss Ferguson sent his brother Martin to see Benzema play last week, which may not be the best time. Far from being in the form that saw him score six goals in eight Champions League appearances earlier in the season, Benzema has netted just four times in Ligue 1 since the turn of the year, something which has contributed to seven-times champions Lyon sliding down into third in the league.
The 21-year-old has in the past vowed to stay at Lyon until he's helped them win the Champions League, but with Lyon missing out on a place in next year's competition a real possibility, United are primed to steal him away.
Across Manchester, Real Madrid defender Fabio Cannavaro claims to have turned down a move to Manchester City. The 35-year-old said that he would rather return to Juventus than move to Eastlands or Bayern Munich, in order to keep his chances of featuring in next year's World Cup as high as possible.
"There will be the World Cup next year and I want to stay relaxed," Cannavaro told Gazzetta dello Sport. "Real Madrid told me I would have to wait until after the presidential election (to find out about a new contract) and advised me to look around. But I have asked my agent to see if he can find a solution.
"I didn't want to have to start from scratch with the World Cup around the corner and that's why I have turned down Manchester City and Bayern."
Wigan Athletic boss Steve Bruce has decided against bringing in a striker from Mexico - insert swine flu reference here - after balking at the price Santos Laguna quoted for Ecuadorean hitman Cristian Benitez.
Instead, he will turn his attentions to Manchester United striker Fraizer Campbell, currently doing precisely diddly-squat on loan at Tottenham.
Talking of Tottenham, depending on who you believe Spurs will be losing their opening game of next season with either John Carew or Kenwyne Jones leading the line.
Jones's current club Sunderland are understandably having second thoughts about making Djibril Cisse's loan from Marseille a permanent deal due to the striker's dip in form.
The former Liverpool forward has hit double figures in the scoring charts this season, but has only scored twice this year as the Black Cats have slipped towards relegation.
In fact, things are so bad for the Lord of the Manor of Frodsham that he is now being kept on the bench by David Healy.
Tabloid sub-editors everywhere will be excited to hear the news that Everton are close to buying French striker Rod Fanni from Rennes. A club insider said: "Mr Moyes was here and we understand he's interested in Rod. We'll see what will happen at the end of the season."
Meanwhile, Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is chasing Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia while another giant centre-back, Fulham's Brede Hangeland, is set to sign a new deal.

Santa Cruz, you will be santa claus very soon if you go that way. stay where you are
or come to MAN UNITED.. we'll make you ralise you dream of playing in the CL
BEL pa zed
Will Harry dump Bent and the Russkie to pick up John Carew or Kenwynne Jones if he wants a target man why not go for Peter Crouch.
welcome Roque Santa Cruz to Emirates
banzema can never be @ oldtrafford, cuz we don't need him. UNITED $ LYF
playerjuliog - i like bendtner, but he can be far too arogant sometimes. Oh and you have to realise that most fans are fickle, when a players doing well, like bendtner was,the love them. But when they're off form they suddenly hate them, its sad but true. Another example was everyone hating hargreaves in the england team untill he scored that penalty.
arsnal can have him his @#$%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeh he can come to arsenal would rather have him lol im gettin excited now he can score loads of goals
we'll be writing about forest here next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
do u mr oxbridge?
"In fact, things are so bad for the Lord of the Manor of Frodsham that he is now being kept on the bench by David Healy."
When has Healy kept him on the bench recently? Do the article writers know anything before writing about it?
no.47 yes bentner cant score a goal even if his life is on the line, but saying he cant pass or flick the ball, pls watch last week league's goal for u surely didnt watch the game. I do agree he needs to go onloan and vela need to be given more chance with eduardo being prone to injury. Diaby loses the ball often watch the CL game against MU for worse reference go watch the newcastle vs arsenal(yes he scored a goal but count how many times he loses the ball) game and chelsea vs arsenal fa cup to see how bad he is
send bendtner on loan so he can get the playing time he wants...i would like to see vela have some more action
unfortunately, basing on current Wenger's policies,we can not have a sharp striker like santa cruz in our squad.
Bentner is a kind of player that can not do passing, flick a ball well,or make a fine control.i do not think he could even be called a player.Plz dear fans, let's be honest, have u realized how our passing game get destroyed when the ball reaches Bendtner's foot? But WENGER is special anyway;how come do you field a such player even in tough games?I 'd rather prefer Carlos Vela instead of that useless so called striker.Unfortunately,he(Bentdtner)will be there annoying us again and again as long as Wenger will be the arsenal boss.
SANTA CRUZ , A TOTAL WASTE OF SPACE , GET RID , USE THE MONEY ON S,ONE WHO WANTS TO PLAY FOR THE CLUB , THE GUY WON'T DO A THING FROM NOW ON !! HIS RECORD IS @#$% , BIG SAM KNOW'S THIS AND WILL CASH IN ON THE DUD !!! .
Cannavaro better stay at Real Madrid, i'm a big fan of Real Madrid and Cannavaro is a great defender, therefore i would want the board of director to decide and extend his contract for at least two more years. He is very experienced and even though he is 35 years old, he is fit like a 25 years oldfootballer. so it wold no be good to let a player of his quality go....
PLS KEEP HIM AT THE BERNABEU FOR MORE TIME!!!!!
lol not wenger...he can buy 15....U16 players with that
anyone else love e name o e guy everton are trying to sign
when i wrote 41 obviously mean comment 42
39. I agree with you.
Bendtner will be a top striker. He' s had situations this season wher eu could see he's tgot class. Wenger is not dumb (comment 41) and he knows what he is doing. If he thought Bendner was @#$% he would not be here :)
please watch some Arsenal games before u critidcize (plus how can u criticize a player of your own club whose been trying hard and playing very well e.g. first game against Roma not to mention the fact that he scores important goals---Dinamo)
