German champion Fabian Wegmann beat Karsten Kroon in a sprint finish to win the Eschborn-Frankfurt City Loop, formerly known as Rund um den Henninger Turn.

Milram rider Wegmann beat Dutchman Kroon of Saxo Bank, winner of the event in 2004 and 2008, at the end of the 190.8km course which covers a series of loops around Frankfurt.

Wegmann and Kroon had broken away from a seven-man lead group on the penultimate lap with the 28-year-old from Freiburg having too much speed in the final 100m, denying Kroon the chance to match Erik Zabel and become a three-times winner of the race.

Christian Knees rounded off a good result for Milram in third.

"This success means a lot to me. This race I always wanted to win," said Wegmann.
