Reading manager Steve Coppell has backed the appointment of Premier League referee Howard Webb for the massive game with Birmingham.

Webb came under fire last weekend after awarding Manchester United a debatable penalty in the 5-2 win over Spurs but Coppell believes he will be the right man for the Madejski Stadium clash.

He told the club's official website: "He admitted making a mistake in the Manchester United game the other week and it is refreshing to hear that from an official.

"But he doesn't make too many during a season. He is thoroughly professional and I've no doubt that he is the top official in the country at the minute.

"He'll prepare for the game as well as all the players on the park.

"It will be an exciting game for the neutral fan across the country and we need to make sure we play our part."
