Ferguson backing for Boro boss

Fri 01 May, 01:57 PM

Sir Alex Ferguson is convinced Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson will stick with Gareth Southgate even if the Teessiders go down.

Manchester United can shove Boro a bit closer to relegation on Saturday when they visit the Riverside for a game that is crucial to their own Premier League title ambitions.

Although the Riverside has not always been a happy hunting ground for Ferguson's men, they will start heavy favourites to overcome a Boro side that have been anchored in the lower reaches of the table for most of the season and seem destined to end up in the Championship.

"Steve Gibson has the courage to stick with a young manager and he won't change," said Ferguson. "There is no doubt about his future. The unfortunate thing in this industry is when a team has three or four bad results, the jungle drums start beating.

"But I think Gareth Southgate has a chairman who will give him longer than most."

  7. hi im a boro fan right and the biggest mistake southgate ever made was becoming manager and selling franck quedrue, jimmy floyd hasselbaink, yakubu and a couple more good players. if we had all them players right we would not repeat would not be in this position and also right southgate was a excellent defender and it took guts to take that last decider penalty for england its not as if anyone else would take it
