Talks over new Weir deal

Mon, 01 Jun 14:10:23 2009

Rangers manager Walter Smith has confirmed the club will begin negotiations over extending defender David Weir's contract.

But Christian Dailly and Brahim Hemdani have both left Ibrox after their contracts ran out.

Smith said: "Davie's 39 and we have an agreement that we sit down and talk at the end of each season."

He added: "I had a few words with him just before the cup final. He's keen to continue and there's a willingness on Rangers' part to have him for another season. Both parties will sit down over the next few days and see what can happen."

Smith added: "We have two players out of contract, Christian Dailly and Brahim Hemdani, and they have left the club."

Meanwhile, Rangers midfielder Maurie Edu will see a specialist over the knee injury that ruled him out of Saturday's Homecoming Scottish Cup final win over Falkirk.

The 22-year-old has pulled out of the USA squad for this week's World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica and Honduras and will also miss the Confederations Cup later this month.

Edu played a key role in Rangers' successful Clydesdale Bank Premier League run-in and was injured during the title-clinching victory over Dundee United.
