League One - League surprised at Saints pull-out

Eurosport - Wed, 01 Jul 15:29:00 2009

The Football League have reacted with surprise to the reasons behind the Matt Le Tissier-backed Pinnacle consortium's failed takeover of Southampton.

Matt Le Tissier - 0

The proposed buy-out stalled last month over the League's 10-point penalty handed out to Saints after their parent company entered administration back in April.

Yet Le Tissier claims he had persuaded his financial backers to accept the deduction, only for "other issues" to scupper the deal.

But a Football League spokesman said: "We are very surprised by the comments that other conditions, allegedly imposed by the League, led to the Pinnacle Group withdrawing from their proposed takeover of Southampton Football Club.

"Throughout our discussions no conditions other than a waiver in regard to sporting sanctions have ever been raised with us as a major issue.

"The Pinnacle Group has been in receipt of a contract from the League for over a week now. To proceed, all it needed to do was to provide clarification in regard to funding and sign the contract."

  1. For a start, why dont Southampton fans stop being so childish over pompey fans and visa versa, there is far too much to worry about at the saints now than this stupid attitude. That kind of thing is ok in the season when all is well with the clubs, but at the moment Saints fans should be worrying about the forthcoming season and pompey fans should, if they are true football fans, be giving Southampton a bit of backing in this terrible time. Remember it is not the team that has caused this,it is the management in the board room.
I think football fans in general should be behind the saints fans at this time. I AM NOT a Southampton supporter, but I am a true football supporter and I wish Southampton football club a speedy recovery from their problems because like it or not, Southampton has always been a grand old club and the team and the fans do not deserve this.Look at the recent happenings at Luton, not a whole lot of difference, the team and the fans got punished for what happened in the board room and look where they are now !
Lets all get behind the Saints and wish them well, no matter who you support, whichever is your club !I do not feel any disregard to my club of which I am a season ticket holder by the way, for backing the Saints in there time of need.

    A Birmingham city supporter.

  2. No club is too big to go down, chairmen shouldn't be allowed to run clubs into the ground and just leave and the League shouldn't be causing further damage with point reductions! On the other side fans need to wake up and get a good dose of reality about their clubs can realistically achieve in the Manchester United " premier league". Build for the future don't buy for the present. That is the only way forward in football.

What's worse is how nobody seems to care!!!
What i don't get is how the Pompey fans are coming on here laughing; your club is DEFINITELY next!

  5. saints are an awsum club the fans and every thing have been brillent and have stuck with them and it was proven with the numbers that turned out for the burnley and palece game last season and even if they do go out of buisness they will still be a bigger club than portsmouth

  6. The Truth about these failed bids and the leagues dealings and timings will come to light eventually.

Who care what you pompey Skates have to say or what you think. You think Arrab money will keep you safe, once your new owner see's what a bunch of smelly loser you are he will drop you like a hot brick.

enjoy the sound of your town hall bells haha

  7. Comment hidden due to its low rating. Show

No one cried when poor Luton were docked 30 points which virtually consined them to conference football. Nor Bournemouth, Rotherham, darlington and Leeds, all of which were docked more points than has been given to the Scummers. Who do this lot of under achievers think they are? Theres only one club in Hampshire. PLAY UP POMPEY

  9. I can't believe that people are still arguing the @#$% on the 10 point reduction, Southampton used to be a Div 1 (prem team) and have had fantastic past players why oh why was a new stadium so important when your finances where not great. Now you suffer the fate of none exsistence, yet your management blocked players leaving when good offers were made, now they are leaving cheap and if 1 default payment is made they can leave free. I don't want to see SUFC disapear they are part of this countries league but I do wish they stop this underhanded claim they are 2 seperate companies for their finances they are NOT period.

  11. Chris 1: How many times does this have to be repeated? SFC and SLH were inseperable. SFC had no assets or cash flow of its own (if it did why is Fry paying/not paying SFC wages?). 10 point deduction was correct. Stop whinging and get on with life. Move on or cease to exist.

  13. the football club (soton) were not in financial trouble another part of the holding company went into receviership and so the football association decided to penalise the club, which is a totaly different situation to other clubs with financial problems, but whatever the money situation what gives the f.a the right to deduct points any penalty should be applied only if the club has failed to meet it,s out going southampton f.c paid their bills therefore points deduction is unfair, points are earned on the pitch not given by anybody, the f.a are ridiculous in the way they make up the rules as they go along same old story one rule for the big clubs who owe many millions more than smaller clubs they carry on with impunity small ones bein forced out

  14. McCauley Culkin, I guess you were 'home alone' when you wondered why QPR have such riches. I'm an Everton supporter but we don't have money or backers. Just a frugal boss who works miracles. Most London clubs attract money and even Brighton has a wealthy backer now. I have no idea why they attract money and our clubs don't. But at least you once had interest from Bill Gates' number two. But if you believed the papers, Everton were being taken over by the Sultan of Brunei back in 1993!!!

  15. I really think its a pity that Southampton are in the situation they are in, for any football team (Big or Small) to be like this is a poor show. However unfortunately football is run like a business and teams need to stay within there means. My team almost went a few years ago and the upset that this can cause within the fans/employees etc etc is dire but whatever the following or "status" of a team should not determine whether the FA stands in or not!

    CUFC Forever!

  16. If you want teams to be saved then the solution is really simple...cap players wages AND have a maximum transfer fee. That way you would see where players' loyalties lie. For example, Have £10m be the most a team can spend on one player and £20,000 a week on wages per player. But it would need to be a worldwide-enforced rule. Otherwise the La Liga will buy everyone. I think it's a simple solution and will save the lower tiers of football too. If anyone on here does agree (or disagrees) please use the thumbs up/down to show your approval or disapproval.

  17. I am NOT a Portsmouth fan but I do hope Southampton go into liquidation and vanish after reading the hypocritical message boards here. No team should be given permission to stay in the league just because of their former status. Football is a business and Southampton FC are the equivalent to Woolworths. You notice them, have a few interesting things but you don't really care until it's too late. Bournemouth, Luton Town, Aldershot, Maidstone...they all are/were on the brink of extinction and the latter two had to vanish. Boston Utd had to drop two divisions when they were relegated from the football league a few years ago. No-one said how their rivalry with Lincoln City was needed. Gretna suffered and vanished into non-existance too. These are all precious clubs to their supporters so why should the 'mighty' Saints get such adornment? Grow up people. If a buyer can't be found, let them go to the wall. It's happened to others. No team is too good to go down. No team is too precious to lose.

  18. i really hope southampton can find some1 to get them through this i am a liverpool fan but when u think of the start of the premiership days and u look at how some of them teams are doing now i keep wishing them all the best teams like southampton sheff weds norwich southampton has some great memories so i wish u all the luck

From John N, on Wed 1 Jul 7:33AM
  19. hope u pull through this, some people don't realise what a team means to any supporter who works all week to go see his/her football team, be it the top 4 or in the premier league or the teams playing in division 3. It's about time that a %tage of every transfer is put into a fund for times like this.

From pomleeds, on Wed 1 Jul 5:20AM
  20. I pity the Southampton fans! The FA and Football League should not allow a club like Southampton to go to the wall. There is sufficient money sloshing around to bale them out - the existence of this club for future generations is far more important than the few million quid they need to keep going. How about a sort of 'value added tax' on the sales of players in the top two divisions to be paid into a benevolent fund for clubs in crisis? 15% on all transfer fees ought to do it.
As for those moronic Pompey fans celebrating Southampton's demise, words fail me. How stupid are they? Their own club is in a similar position and could go the same way, Apart from that though, the inter-club rivalry and banter is in itself a valuable asset to the enjoyment of football. I speak as a lifelong Spurs fan who enjoys seeing Arsenal lose to anyone - BUT if they were to go tits up I would hate it more. We football supporters need local rivalry, so shut up you Pompey morons - give some support as you NEED Southampton.
