League One - League surprised at Saints pull-out

Eurosport - Wed, 01 Jul 15:29:00 2009

The Football League have reacted with surprise to the reasons behind the Matt Le Tissier-backed Pinnacle consortium's failed takeover of Southampton.

Matt Le Tissier - 0

The proposed buy-out stalled last month over the League's 10-point penalty handed out to Saints after their parent company entered administration back in April.

Yet Le Tissier claims he had persuaded his financial backers to accept the deduction, only for "other issues" to scupper the deal.

But a Football League spokesman said: "We are very surprised by the comments that other conditions, allegedly imposed by the League, led to the Pinnacle Group withdrawing from their proposed takeover of Southampton Football Club.

"Throughout our discussions no conditions other than a waiver in regard to sporting sanctions have ever been raised with us as a major issue.

"The Pinnacle Group has been in receipt of a contract from the League for over a week now. To proceed, all it needed to do was to provide clarification in regard to funding and sign the contract."

  2. RIP English football. Killed off by greed, the Premiership circus and blinkered "supporters" with their "I'm all right Jack" attitudes. Ten years from now there will be maybe ten clubs in Britain soaking up 100% of the money before the TV will realise that football has become just another minority sport and then they will pull the plug. After the house of cards has fallen maybe football can start over..........but sadly I doubt it. Which will be the next institution to be milked to death until it's lost forever?

  3. The sad thing is that clubs becoming extinct means who will develop local talent? All clubs contribute to their local communities through kids coaching and skills development. When there are less clubs that gives kids less opportunities to develop as players and means less of a talent pool in the long run. The less teams there are the less competitive football becomes. Keep it up and English football will be as exciting as the SPL oh that's right it has we have four teams instead of two so I guess that makes it twice as exciting.

  4. "We were unaware of the issues with the Football League"
Pinnacle must have been the only people in the UK that were unaware of a 10 pt deduction, therefore were hardly suitable to run the club anyway.
I'm a United fan, but I have fond memories of the Dell, can even forgive you for '76, I really hope the club survives and that St. Mary's is full next season.

  5. This Pinnacle thing with MLT was never going to happen. False hope and hype. Prob just did it to create a bit of interest from other parties. No other parties materialised and they are forced to make excuses and pull out. Why the hell we can't find a buyer I don't know. Why the f**k does someone buy a club like QPR but no one is interested in SFC? Fin crisis has made people realise there is no money to be made in football unless you are a Mr 15%. Looks like it's time for a new club. Saints FC anyone? Svennson as manager paid by the fans for the fans. We could work our way up the leagues lke AFC Wimbledon or FC United. I'll start things off by chucking a £5 in.........

  6. Hardly time to celebrate for Pompey fans, this was us a decade ago, we got lucky and have proceeded to be led a merry dance by rich boys looking for a toy ever since. Pompey aren't exactly on a sound financial setting either and if the oil merchant fails this is us again in a few months. As much as I like to see the Scum fail there needs to be a club in the first place for any pointing and laughing to take place, football is unbalanced severely and it needs to be addressed. The gaps are too massive, the risks and gambles taken by owners/board members to reap such rewards when having to operate on relative scraps too tempting. Responsibility needs to be taken somewhere somehow before football in this country tumbles further away from the supporters that ultimately fund it and give it the passion and glamour "the man" is so eager to buy, plunder and exploit.

  8. When a Football Club gets into Financial trouble whos fault is it? A Football Club is like any other business, it goes through good times and bad. In good times it has money in the Bank and the Bank uses this money to extend its own business! When the Club is going through lean times then it goes to the Bank. What does the Bank do, usually it may extend a loan, a loan at possibly exorbitant rates of interests! this is hard for the club but usually they have no choice and most accept the higher interest in order to keep the Club solvent! Should the Club have further lean times and return to the Bank they find that the Bank will foreclose, Mortgage holders know this, and the club goes into liquidation! No probleml for the Bank, no twinge of conceience, why it is only a business, and business world is hard! They don`t think about people, fans or tradition of how the Club is part of the Life of any town or city because it is part of the people of that town or City! The Bank give you an Umberella when the Sun shines but asks for it back when it starts to Rain! We all know what happens though when the Banks get into trouble don`t we? They run to the Government and ask for money, taxpayers money, money from the working men and women who supported the Club that had to go into Liquidation because the Banks would no longer help! What do they say? What goes around comes around, I surely hope that that is true! Signed A Leeds United Fan!

  10. It really is a pity to see this happen to any club i even would not like this to happen to man city i hate them but not this much.

The FA should make it easy to get these clubs out of jail and help a takeover happen not make it even harder.

What a shame i hope all comes good in the end.

Portsmouth fans i would keep quiet you never know what is round the corner!!!!!

  12. despite a 10 point penalty southampton would still be in the top six at the end of the season unlike poor old luton who were doomed for the drop because the league and f a could not get their act together by issuing separate points deductions a bloody disgrace.
