Lions centre Brian O'Driscoll and assistant coach Graham Rowntree have expressed outrage over comments by Springbok coach Peter de Villiers on Schalk Burger's ban for eye gouging.
"To hear the South African coach Peter de Villiers talk about gouging as being part of the game was semi-repulsive," O'Driscoll told Irish state radio.
Rowntree also lashed out: "I can get quite emotional about this so I'd better tread carefully. What De Villiers said was completely out of order, it was crass and pathetic."
Burger was banned for eight weeks on Sunday for gouging the eyes of Lions winger Luke Fitzgerald in the first minute of the second Test in Pretoria the previous day. The victory gave the Springboks the three-match series.
The South African Rugby Union had to issue a statement apologising for comments by de Villiers defending the flanker.
"We are trying to promote the game and yet you hear comments like that. I just find it appalling. I truly find it a disgrace," O'Driscoll said. He was returning home on Wednesday with concussion and will miss the third Test.
"If it's not clamped down, you are going to lose people to the game of rugby and that's essentially the bigger picture."
De Villiers said afterwards, in defence of Burger, that rugby was bound to feature more knocks than ballet.
Rowntree added: "Gouging is indefensible and there is no place for it in the game. For a national coach to almost say it is okay is ridiculous. We're upset by it and he can't get away with it," Rowntree said.
The former Lions prop also called for heavier penalties for gouging.
"There've been a lot of high-profile cases in the last six months so there probably needs to be a greater deterrent put in place," he said.
Rowntree also said that the Lions had plenty of energy and resources left for the final Test on Saturday.
"The Springboks will be trying to whitewash us, they think we're on the ropes and emotionally down. Normally at this stage of a Lions tour injuries have taken their toll and the squad is held together by elastoplast.
"But I can assure them this team is in good nick and there is still plenty of gas in the tank."
Rowntree added that 33-year-old tight-head Phil Vickery, who was savaged by Tendai 'Beast' Mtawarira in the first Test, is back in the frame for selection although he did not complete training on Wednesday due to a throat infection.

He might not be the smartest bloke on the blok-but the lions stil have to say they got there arses whopped by an idiot with a band of green protea-springbok hooligans.. eish is tough!! africa is unforgiving baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and I quote ....
"Some comments about Burger should've been sent off - surely the commentators don't want to have to reduce the opposition to 14 men in order to beat them?"
you're right - no matter how bad the offence is (and, lets face it, eye gouging isn't as bad as giving someone a chinese burn is it?) it would be much healthier for the game of rugby for all matches to be fully contested by 15-a-side no matter what ....
And no I'm not being serious - i'm just incredulous as the comment I quoted. Crass in the extreme!!
Dear Old Mike. Here I am trying to have a battle of wits with an unarmed man.
Nice to see your blood pressure's up. What time are you due down the school gates ?
Boris writes:
"Violence leads to more violence - even winning matches in this way deosnt meet the needs of violent minded players and officials - these people want to see violence not sportsmanship and sport".
What sort of psychobabble is this?
I particularly enjoy the "violent minded officials" comment. I had no idea that the IRB had such insurgents lurking in their midst.
Sounds like you have a hangover from the cold war, Boris!
I find the comments about the "cheating" by South Africa quite ignorant. One of the reporters speaks about "5" players going to hospital (dcullen1) is really uninformed if inferring that the South Africans were responsible. O'Driscoll and the forward both tackled the SA wing in what I would term a high tackle and both came out the worse for it.
I am viewing the games from Canada and found them very entertaining and the second test possibly an all-time great.
There was lots of passion, especially from O'Driscoll, most of which I would describe as borderline dangerous. He engaged in a number of high tackles and should have been sensored so I find it strange that he comes out and comments negatively about the SA team. I believe he should look at his passage of play before doing so.
The Lions played wonderfully but lost because they couldn't score more tries - surely the real test in a game of this magnitude.
Some comments about Burger should've been sent off - surely the commentators don't want to have to reduce the opposition to 14 men in order to beat them?
Brits think they are superior to everyone else,
they cant even beat the sarf efricans at shiiiite,
stick to traffic fining your way out of hell, you gobshites
You got a thumping, the BNrits like a thumpin.
Robipenburg.
Rugby is a physical game which is fine. However the thing that gets me, speaking as one of those whining Northern hemisphere types you so despise, is that you southern hemisphere chaps don't get that the game you play which relies on professional fouling, cheating and generally stretching the rules to breaking point makes the game less enjoyable to watch and in fact drives the IRB to impose ever more safety rules and measures on the game which in turn make it less enjoyable to watch and play, etc, etc, etc. Eventually it will turn into touch rugby and how much fun would that be to watch Robipenburg?
So if you want a fair, hard and open game of rugby like Scotland had against the Springboks in a recent autumn test then bring it on. If on the other hand you insist on cheating because winning is more important than the survival and development of the great game of rugby union then withdraw to your southern heartland and we northern whiners can invite some new people like Argentina to play.
A message to all BOKS - take your punishment - you got away with it - the two cheats who were caught wont have any further part on this tour. Your National coach doesnt speak for the 3 first sides we saw who played the lions. Violence leads to more violence - even winning matches in this way deosnt meet the needs of violent minded players and officials - these people want to see violence not sportsmanship and sport.
robipenburg you fool - O'Driscoll is actually Irish!
Shame you guys can't win a game of Rugby without causing so many injuries. No sport should involve 5 people ending up in hospital after a game.
blah blah blah...the English are still a whining lot and we as southern hemisphere supporters should realise this and f..ing ignore them. When the Northern hemisphere and herby I put the English in poll position, understand that rugby is not for little boys who whine and whine and whine..but for guys who expect a little physical workout, then they will be able to compete with SH sides, and maybe win....so in short stop whining and play rugby girls!!!!!
Mike why are you here, this is a rugby forum and seeing as though you are quite evidently not a rugby fan why dont you go back to the forum of a sport of which you are, you dont see any pathetic comments being made by rugby fans on other sports' forums so just pi ss off.
donald shut your mouth slaphead
Was that a fight? - safe behind their computers. Must have had a bad bad day at work or the missus has been nagging them.....
Mike, your sentences make no sense. You need to learn to punctuate. And, if you've not been reported for saying shagger, I think you might get away with dipshite. It's really nice to have younger people comment, but I think you might have given a wrong impression of us Brits (and Irish) to the South African readers. Before they lock you away for the evening, can you post one more comment confirming that you are either an 8 year old, or an adult with a very low mental age? Cheers, and sweet dreams.
ian you have experience of dipping in @#$%?
you'd be safe then Mike.... thought you'd gone quiet - you been making sure all your spellings were okay? Dipshite.
ian=ponce who likes his head between mens legs
Thanks bevpates... but i'd not get wound up if I were you. I'm sure Milesey (like that by the way) is just one of those knobs that goes on these to annoy others. His spelling really is atrocious though.
Anyway, although we have best players absent through injury and probably the most biased referee in the world, I'll be cheering on The British & Irish Lions in their final match for another 4 years. It's been an awesome tour, spoilt only by some bad referees, and it's great to see the whole Lions concept being given a massive vote of confidence by the attitude of South African rugby.
Come on Lions!!!
