Manchester United have made their first signing of the summer after confirming a deal has been done for Antonio Valencia.
The 23-year-old Ecuador international has signed a four-year contract after moving for an undisclosed fee.
Valencia, who joins from Wigan where he scored three goals last season, is expected to help fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo following the star winger's £80 million move to Real Madrid.
Valencia's signature is reported to have cost United in the region of £16m with the winger describing the move as a "dream".
"Joining Manchester United is a dream come true for me," he told the club website.
"I have enjoyed my time at Wigan, but I am thrilled to have the chance to challenge for the biggest honours in club football here.
"Playing in front of 76,000 fans alongside players like Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs will be an amazing experience. I can't wait to get started."
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he had tracked Valencia's progress since his arrival at Wigan two seasons ago.
"Antonio is a player we have admired for some time now, having spent the last two years in the Premier League with Wigan," he said.
"I am sure his pace and ability will make a significant contribution to the team."

@ 3D - Cheers, been a United fan all 19 yrs of my life :) but i would say getting a good player on the left is more important, i mean giggsy has proved he can fill the role of playmaker for a couple of seasons still - yeah he's getting on, but he should be aple to play 60-70mins regularly in the centre. i think i would play anderson in the middle with him - he's good at tracking back and tackling plus he's strong, and he's good running forward with the ball (just needs to score now, eh?) - but i cant see nani or tosic being able to play regular 1st team - suppose we shall see come next season, there's still plenty of time to make more signings!
Ronaldo might not have been the most famous when he came to Old Trafford but he was still the biggest talent on the planet. I don't any of us would say the same about Valencia.
valencia looked a pretty good player for wigan so with better players around him i think he will play even better. also he does track back which will help raphael defensively. we will be better balanced and he sounds like he really wants to play for united. give him a chance remember ronaldo wasn't the most famous footballer on the planet when he came to OT but he left us as the most famous.
Man U will probably go a season without winning anything whilst the engine of the red machine coughs and splutters its way to full power again... I'm sure it won't be 20 years before we win another premier league title - in fact I don't think they've gone more than 2 seasons without winning anything at all in a very long time. However, as a Reds' fan it would be good to see us having to fight harder than we did this year against other clubs for the title - it's what makes the climax to the season great - win or lose. As for the Champions' League - Man u will be drawn against The Galacticos of Real Madrid. It just has to happen because that's the way it is in football,,,,, you can't runaway from your worst nightmare!!
As for you so called football fans - Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Madrid, Barcelona etc; I'm sick of your underlying deeply racist fuel-filled. vile. bigotted and small minded nastiness on this site.
I hate racism of any kind and hate the fact that it is 'accepted' behaviour on the terraces by idoits like yourselves - the very people who complain of people being 'racist' against them when the locals or police from opposing clubs (be they national or international)show displeasure at your behaviour and act in a manner to suit. By the way, do any of you morons know the real (non-football related) history behind the hatred between certain clubs???
Yes I agree with comments posted about capping wages and transfer fees etc; Very few players show loyalty to clubs and the signing of a contract at the end of the day is very much like the signing of a marriage certificate - done because it's seen as the right thing to do. In other words 'playing the part'. I remember when Trevor Francis became the first million pound player in British footaball and was shocked to say the least, the i thought the huge fee paid for Zidan was ridiculous, so you can well imagine what I feel about the amou

Top names coming in?? We try our best to get rid of top names. We do the scouting, train them up, turn them into world class palyers and then sell them cheap to Real Madrid. Alex Ferguson has turned us into nothing more than a feeder club for Real Madrid.
PS. Bit of a looker aren't you?
Comment 341 From wt.tham. Who is Valencia?
Ans: Another spectacular waste of £16m from Sir Alex Ferguson. Take a bow, Sir Alex.

Who is Valencia?
What number will he wear? Not 7 i guess?
Time will tell if this is a good signing. But they definitely need a proven striker to make up for Ronaldo's goals. Valencia doesn't score many but will be a much better defensive player than CR ever was and he should provide the crosses for the strikers. Rooney must be allowed to play up front with Berbatov and whoever else Fergie signs. Problem is, not many South Americans have done well at United. Think Veron, Klebersen, Anderson, Tevez.
These are testing times as Scholes, Giggs and Neville are way past their best and Nani, Anderson, just not good enough. They will also need a top class goalkeeper as Van Der Saar must be coming to the end of his time. Doubts also over Tosic. Come on Fergie, splash the cash

Ronaldo's first season he scored 6 in 40 games, not exactly prolific. Valencia is not a direct replacement for Ronaldo, just like Ronaldo wasn't for Beckham and Beckham wasn't for Kanchelskis. Valencia will be more of a goal provider with Rooney and Berbatov/Benzema taking more of the goals.
Arsenal are saying united dive? firstly i think that is aimed at Cristiano who has obviously now left. Secondly i think you'll find Arsenal dive. Look back at your unbeaten season and the draw you gained at Portsmouth, think you'll find Pires taking a tumble.
valencia is not a direct replacement for ronaldo , , ronaldo finished off his united career as a striker but valencia will play on the wing , , so stop comparing them!!!!
When man utd signed ronaldo, the say thing was said "who is ronaldo",how he is worth 80 million dollars. So please give valencia a break,he is very good and will even help rooney play a more central role.
lets look at this another way. can manure afford NOT to get into CL due to lack of goal scoring ? 50 million quid on tv income plus gate receipts ? If they dont get inyo CL how long will the glaziers continue ? and a new manager due as well
STEVEN IS MA FREN...EVAN DOE I IS FAN OF DA MANCHESTER...HE SO PRETTY...KEEAAARRRGGGHHH
mcpluker, your delusion is as bad as your spelling. Hows Kaka getting on at city these days?? - oh wait, he turned you down.....you offer Etoo 200,000 a week and he still wants 12.5 mill to sign with you - cos he knows he isn't gonna win @#$% with you scum. as for Tevez, you can have him, as always you have paid over the odds for an over-rated player. Deluded bitter berties......33 years.....
