Xabi Alonso has again refused to rule out a move to Real Madrid, meaning Liverpool fans may soon have to get used to life without the talented midfielder.
Should Alonso go, how badly will he be missed?
Such was his excellent form last season, there is no doubt his absence would be keenly felt - even more keenly should midfielder partner Javier Mascherano also leave Anfield for Spain.
A fee of 65 million euros for the pair, along with Alvaro Arbeloa, has been mooted in Spain but is that enough to adequately compensate Liverpool for the loss of two of their best players?
And with last summer's main target Gareth Barry now off the market, who could be brought in to replace them?

So Real Madrid are also after Alonso and Mascerano. Just how many players does that club want ?. They will have to abandon the subs bench and form an orderly queue if they want to get on the pich at all. Ridiculous and the Spanish club need hauling over the coals for unsporting and ungentlemany conduct in approaching players behind the clubs backs ( all clubs ). But then they are subsidised by the Spanish Government and Banks, and receive the blessing of that one sided Board at UEFA . They must included in the Guiness book of records as the club with the highest debts in football.
don't let Alonso and Xavier to live LFC. It will be a diasaster.
The answer to the article's question is.. he would definately be missed.. But i dont think he is going anywhere he know he is very highly valued playing along side gerrard and mascerano(who isnt going anywhere either) and has the support of his manager. Madrid nor Juve will get him.
in my opiniuon if Alonso wanths 2 leave , then we should let hem leave beacause he simply said that he wouldnt mind going 2 Real . this means that next season he will not fight with all that hes got and if we (lfc) wanth 2 win a title after 2 decades of waiting we need players who wanth 2 win the leag . even though Alonso is one of the d best holders in the world . Mascherano should stay on the other hand as we will never find a replacment close to his high standards but we might find someone insted of Alonso . Alonso should be sold at about 30mil . sell Arbeloa as well for 13mil . then we should buy Snejder ( Real Madrid ) and a great attacker like Negrado ( Atletico Madid )
He's not going anyhwere!!!! its just papaer talk!!!!
DONT GO PLEASE!!!
it's not worth it. he's a good playmaker.
we need him!!!!
It seems a good offer, but theres no-one about to replace their two centre midfielders Alonso and Mascherano thats good enough anyway!
I seriously think pound for pound we have the best spine in the EPL if not Europe, Regardless of Kaka and The Diver moving. It won't REALly make a difference as they have to settle in. And you know how long that fake took to settle in at manure. Whatever cash we have would be best spent on keeping the two key elements that make the Reds so feared now! If they insist on moving ( i wouldn't know why as they'd be bit players with the over abundance of talent in Spain), then sell them for crazy dollars. 30 million or more. They should cost as much as Iniesta right? I mean if manure can pay I believe 18mil for Valencia.... Either scare the buyers away or fill our booty for Rafa to go and get quality players. My hope is to keep them until at least the Jaunary window and blood our youth instead. Maybe we could go and buy another but after 40 years of being a Red from Singapore. This team has the most potential of claiming the next decade with Rafa at the helm. YNMA.
Benitez shld stop fooling around.
I want him to know dat if we will win the next premiership league, he will need to have two standing "first-eleven"!
Since he is used to changing team formation in every match.
He shld be more than real for next season & always listen to advice!
Liverpool 4 life............
I believe any good player should be allowed to move wherever he wish.......
Dat is d test of a good coach! Benitez should not brace up & not hold any1 down rather, he shld look deeply into d market for better sleeky players in Spain either known or unknown! Players like "David Villa(valencia), Ikechukwu Uche(4gt where he plays for presently), David Silva(valencia), Andreas Iniesta (barca), Jossi Altidore (U.S). We also need good goalkeepers! Reina, is too risky for a real championship!
Liverpoolfc is more than a club!
if either of them get sold im gonna remove my testicles with a rusty blunt instrument.
I can't see him leavin his adopted home (and a nice one too) for a place on the Real bench. When it all boils down to it, if he really wants to go then let him say so otherwise the rumour control monsters will keep this going on and on ffs.
It wouldn't make any sense to dismantle a central midfield pairing that is working and I doubt we could get adequate replacements no matter what money we get for them. We need to keep the squad intact with just a few additions, remember that Rafa didn't use all of the (small) transfer budget on the Johnston deal, so he could probably make one more signing this summer before needing to sell anyone.
no fu*king way can mascherano or xabi go 2 spain, they are the best 2 holding players in d world, give the 2 of them new 5 year deals on 100k a week; cause if any player is worth that type of money its XABI and MASCH..
