Xabi Alonso has again refused to rule out a move to Real Madrid, meaning Liverpool fans may soon have to get used to life without the talented midfielder.
Should Alonso go, how badly will he be missed?
Such was his excellent form last season, there is no doubt his absence would be keenly felt - even more keenly should midfielder partner Javier Mascherano also leave Anfield for Spain.
A fee of 65 million euros for the pair, along with Alvaro Arbeloa, has been mooted in Spain but is that enough to adequately compensate Liverpool for the loss of two of their best players?
And with last summer's main target Gareth Barry now off the market, who could be brought in to replace them?

we saved mascharanos career and dis is how he repays us??? let him go as for muamba no thanks buy villa or aguerro and move gerrard back to the centre we dont really need masch as alonso doesn go forward and we now have the quality and grit all round to do witout a player who just tackles. i feel he wants to leaver due to tevez not signing which is ridiculous as am i d only one who remembers tevez saying he wants to retire in his late 20s??? offer alonso a new contract, sell masch and buy a striker and some squad players e.g. markus berg, joe hart, adam johnson, and use martin kelly jay spearing, darby, nemeth and pacheco
gerard needs to go and so does torres to manutd
He is the best midfilder for liverpool.
if both left stevie would b put where alonso plays and then buy yaya toure 4 the holdin role and wit the rest of the money buy villa2 play behind torres..just pay the 40mil they want 4 him.. in midfeild stevie would score more goals than alonso ..i hope they stay tho..di rosie from roma wouldnt b a bad cover either..lucas will lose us points next season..hes just not good enough4 lfc
Comment #57(shajushelwin),Do you really know much about football? You proposed Agbonlahor/Ashley Younbg to replace Alonso? Is there any correlation between thier roles on the pitch? You Muppet!
We must keep Xabi for any cost , he is key player
Haaaaaaa! now you know what it's like....all deserting ..your scouser ship....haaaaaaa!
i think liverpool should buy Maxi Rodríguez for mascherano ashely young/ agbonlahor (if i spelt it right) for alonso
liverpool's best player last season....stevie g is the man but can be a bit inconsistent..tries to take to much on himself...xabi should stay..fans love him....benitez needs to offer him 100g a year...who could you replace him with...maybe carrick but noone else mes thinks
I don't think we should let either go. With both of them we can have Gerrard running ramped up front with Torres.
At least if Mascherano to Barca he can give Ronaldo a boot in the b"**%$ks when he plays against Madrid
if they both go then use the money and add some to it and go and buy david villa, david silva and juan manuel mata. villa up alongside torres, bring stevie g back into central midfield, play silva on the right and buy a solid holding midfielder............
Nobody leaves Liverpool!
I think he will leave, but hope will stay!
It would be stupid for Liverpool to let him go unless they could fetch a small fortune from Madrid. With Gerrard playing up front behind Torres, their midfield would lack serious quality without him. Had they purchased Barry for less than what they might sell Xabi for, maybe this could've worked out but that ship has sailed. Mascherano is great at his role, but Xabi has this vision you can't find on the market even if you have the money to spend.
Alonso needs to stay in a red jersey, but that red jersey should be ARSENAL right next to Cesc on the pitch
im a liverpool fan thru and thru and i hav to say if we lose masch or alonso the title nxt season is not a possibility. These 2players are the 2 bst central midfield players in the world at this moment along with Stevie G. The 65mil euros being suggested for arby, masch and alonso is not nearly enough. But i belive masch cannot be stopped and he will eventually leave liverpool if not this season then nxt. But as for alonso i can see him staying as he wants the prem title jst as much as carra and stevie. But if we must sell both my fees wuld be.
Alonso-30million euros.
Masch- 25million euros. But ofcourse only in the current market.
SG , Alonso has shown nothing but loyalty to the clkub. Last year he was offered by benitez to a host of clubs despite wanting to stay, so it is not surprising that he considers his future. Having said this I believe he will stay
I don't think Liverpool could afford to let Alonso go as there is no one else like him available! On the other hand if Liverpool could get at least £30m for Masch then I believe Muamba could do a decent job for a good price and then we could also bring in a quality striker like luis fabiano or higuain!
Any player wanting to leave should be shown the door. Players who are seeking pastures new, and have expressed their desire publicly, are harmful to the dressing room atmosphere. Although Alonso has not said "I want to leave" he has not said he does not want to leave, so same thing. His value is higher than it will ever be, this summers ridiculous transfer fees will not continue to be as high over the coming years. Players who are going for 25 million this year will go for 15 next. Cash in, spend wisely, move forward. Also, could be a great opportunity to begin to bring through youth players, unearth the next Gerrard, Walcott, or dare I say it Owen.
