Xabi Alonso has again refused to rule out a move to Real Madrid, meaning Liverpool fans may soon have to get used to life without the talented midfielder.
Should Alonso go, how badly will he be missed?
Such was his excellent form last season, there is no doubt his absence would be keenly felt - even more keenly should midfielder partner Javier Mascherano also leave Anfield for Spain.
A fee of 65 million euros for the pair, along with Alvaro Arbeloa, has been mooted in Spain but is that enough to adequately compensate Liverpool for the loss of two of their best players?
And with last summer's main target Gareth Barry now off the market, who could be brought in to replace them?

Let's be honest, Alonso & Mascherano are better than the absolute @#$% that Man United have in the centre of their midfield. Think we can afford to let one go, but not both.
I THINK WE SHOULD SELL ALONSO AND MASCHERANO I CAN UNDERSTAND THEM WANTING TO LEAVE FOR A BIGGER FOOTBALL CLUB I UNDERSTAND THEY WANT TO WIN THINGS RAFA SHOULD SELL BOTH FOR £29.MILLION ALONSO £15.MILLION AS HES JUST AN AVERAGE PLAYER AND £14.MILLION FOR MASCHERANO IN THERE PLACE I WANT SAMMY LEE AND RAFA THE FAT MAN LOOKS A BIT HANDY WITH THE BALL ALSO RAFA NEEDS TO GET SOME WEIGHT OFF THE FAT GIT AND WITH THE MONEY PAY OFF SOME OF THE INTEREST WE OWE ON OUR LOAN.
IAM ONE OF THE ORIGINAL GLORY HUNTERS FROM THE EIGHTYS AND NINETYS WHEN LIVERPOOL WHERE WINNING THINGS I THINK THOUGH WE WILL FINISH FIFTH NEXT SEASON AND BE KNOCK OUT THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE EARLY I REALLY HOPE SO LIVERPOOL TILL I @#$% IN MY PANTS
Lukas, Mascherano, Babel and Ngog can go to madrid or anywhere else but not XABI ALONSO
Real Madrid is a good club for Alonso to moves on wih his career but isn't 28 millions is too cheap or Xabi Alonso.....HEy! come on....its Xabi Alonso......
Why not let Alonso go and buy Arshavin .WHAT DO U THINK?
Let Mascherano go, I don't think he would be Rafa's favourite next season but Alonso MADRID SHOULD NOT DARE!!!
Enough of Alonso .we seriously need a world class left back Fabio and Andriy were not the answer last season, they maid a coople of silly mistakes .We need an ASHLEY COLE at Anfield.
Alonso is good but if madrid pays 30million for him then it would be better if we by a world class striker like Eto'o .Isn't it a good idea?
hope alonso to stay
but if he really want to move, then let him go
but,with good price
dont let mascherano go,
coz its hard to find a midfielder like him
I dont want to see Alonso go but if he doesnt want to stay then that is that! The most important thing is that we get the best fee possible for probably our best player last season. As for Mascherano i just hope its paper talk. The guy is awesome in midfield at breaking up attacks, also Argentine captain so the guy should command at least 35 million in todays crazy prices.Hope we keep these 2 guys at the end of the day, think Arbeloa should go as he just is not good enough!
Let him go if he wants to .Maybe we can buy Iniesta isn't it great?
Let him go if he wants to .Maybe we can buy Iniesta isn't it great.
Perez is an assssssss hole, he goes pays 80m pounds for ronaldo, but he only offers 65m euros for three players which are better than one player ronaldo. I would take alonso and mascherano over the flop ronaldo.
I think David Ngog did not help matters when we needed him most last season .I know he his young but I think he should go and a very good striker like Loius Fabiano should come in .
Florentino you are a f**** old c***. 65 mil for three players ????? If he want them he must offer a 90 mil deal. Because JAvier Mascherano is worth 50 mil and Alonso 35 mil. And then is here Arbeloa who is worth at least 5 mil. He wont get this such quality for 65 mil . He is ridiculus......!!!!
NOOOOOO ! Let him go when hes 50 ....
He was a major figure in Liverpool last season. I think Fernando Torres likes playing with Alonso. If he goes, the whole team would miss him. sell Lukas and Spearing instead
ALONSO PLEASE STAY!!! YOU ARE SIMPLY THE BEST!!! UNDOUBTEDLY ONE OF THE BEST PLAYMAKERS IN THE WORLD!!! YOU WILL BE MISSED SO MUCH!!!
i really hope he stays which i think he will because benitez will probably bring in more spaniards and it will make him more comfortable. and with liverpool strong favourites to win the premier league next season due to the departure of ronaldo i don't think he will turn down a chance to win maybe the best league in the world!!
if benitez can keep our stars i think we are clear favourites and will win the league and again do well in europe!!
Xabi must be there - think about it, there is no other central midfielder around who would join us in exchange...
I always thought the CM position is key to any team. The man who can hold the ball, wait for the wingers to get up front, get behind one player and make the pass to start the attack. Lampard, Carrick (scholes), Fabregas (rosicky), Arteta, Downing, Parker, Elano, Barry, Murphy, Palacios, Krajncar; Iniesta, Juninho, Snejder, Diarra, Senna, Kaka, van Bommel...
With StevieG far up front, I can't see any one as a reasonable substitute and should we get another striker, StevieG in CM role is a waste and Alonso's passes would be hugely missed anyway.
Xabi, look into the mirror. You want to stay in Liverpool because you know you can achieve what a best footballer's career is about at Anfield. Don't be silly, make yourself a legend with us... YNWA
they are as they stand only RUMORS cant afford to sell him
