Transfers - Your view: Alonso a big miss?

Eurosport - Wed, 01 Jul 11:28:00 2009

Xabi Alonso has again refused to rule out a move to Real Madrid, meaning Liverpool fans may soon have to get used to life without the talented midfielder.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Liverpool Xabi Alonso - 0

Should Alonso go, how badly will he be missed?

Such was his excellent form last season, there is no doubt his absence would be keenly felt - even more keenly should midfielder partner Javier Mascherano also leave Anfield for Spain.

A fee of 65 million euros for the pair, along with Alvaro Arbeloa, has been mooted in Spain but is that enough to adequately compensate Liverpool for the loss of two of their best players?

And with last summer's main target Gareth Barry now off the market, who could be brought in to replace them?

  1. let them go if they don't want to stay. the manager will find right replacement sooner or later. it's not the end of the world without both players. we can get better one if the manager has the money to spend. Fresh faces might be good to the fans though. We still have a lot of great players in the team. Don't worry too mcuh. We will be No. 1 in the premier league next year.

  3. There is obviously something going on behind the scenes regarding Alonso and Rafa and i am pleased it's not "out there2 in the press as Liverpool always used to keep any problems in-house. It appears that rafa is not happy with the players attitude and would be willing to let him go FOR THE RIGHT price. Means rafa can bring in player/players who DO want to play here Yes Alonso is good and had a great season but i feel that javier is the one we would miss more.

  4. Word is REAL MADRID will only come back for ALONSO if they fail to sign VILLA!!

    £25M...............he's worth more than that!!!

DON'T sell him RAFA.....................we are within touching distance of the PERMIERSHIP!!

IF you sell him..............................we'll be a YARD away!!!

    SELL.....................LUCAS/BABEL/DOSSEN!!!

  8. Who can blamd Xabi for going? The way he was treated this time last year was poor.
Good luck to him if he goes, but lets hope he stays!

  10. They cant buy him. Xabi Alonso like Nasry in Aesenal , like Lampard in Chelsea , like Xavi Hernandez in Barca , like Del Peiro in Juvantus , مثل نشات اكرم بالعر اق

  11. Last season Alonso was by far our most consistent player. He is as important to Liverpool as either Gerrard,Torres or Mascherano. However if he does decide to go,and I personally hope he doesn't,then Rafa must be given the money to spend on a replacement. If we manage to capture David Villa then perhaps Stevie G could drop back into central midfield to provide the passes that Xavi does.

  12. as ex-captain of the u-21 if lucas is the worst then we have a chance to beat brazil !
one day in the world cup finals !
why so hardcore anti lucas ?
i think babel and degen should be wearing those comments !
one for not showing up to 1 game last season the other for not using the chances that were given
now that i am really taking wickets, yes even lord rafa has to get one too !
20,000,000 for robbie "crybaby" keane was the joke of the season!
then to sell him for 16,000,000 back to the same team ???????????? in my books thats -24,000,000,
which is over half of the -42,000,000 that was run in the red !
love you to death for everything that you have done in the last 5 years but, what were you thinking rafa ???????
    1. vororin did not cost a penny
    2. he plays to 90% the same as "crybaby"
    3. moved him to germany to make way for "crybaby" and worked wonders for berlin !
give him a chance ! and finally he was the better partner to @#$% utd babietov when they played together at levekusen

  13. Alonso should stay because he is as important as Torres, Gerrard to Liverpool for any glory. liverpool can't affort to lose him, he is only one pass master in the world right now.

From nurul a, on Tue 30 Jun 11:48AM
  14. Bottom line is if he wants to be a little @#$% like ronaldo and go for the money let him simple coz i think lucas did ok towards the last part of the season so give him a chance along side mascherano he is never gona get better sat on the bench and u dont captain the brasil under 21 side or be rated the best player in brasil if u dont have pottential and i thing babel should get his chance up front as second choice to torres he is quick and hes got skill and he scores goals thats all we lacked last season was goals when torres wasnt fit i think babel can give us that

From Paul, on Tue 30 Jun 11:43AM
  15. if he really wants to go then let him !
with that money a package we could hope for
    "the torres / villa show"
maybe even get silva thrown in ...

  16. ALONSO MUST STAY!!!!!!!

From rmkaddo, on Tue 30 Jun 11:11AM
  17. Alonso in the short term can not be replaced and would leave us short for the title again next season, he's under contract and should be told so. I here lots saying get rid of players who want out, if thats the case why have contracts. Look at Gareth Barry last term, he said he wanted out so many times, was forced to stay and had a great season. Xabi and Masch should be told the same. They also should have the decency to give us a year to find replacements. Liverpool made them both the players they are and they should be reminded of this. I don't really beleive either will would go anyway as we're so close. If Xabi was to go, then Masch would be told to wait till the club is ready to sell. He has three years left and if he wouldn't extend then he should be moved on with two left. Leaving contracts to run down as in the case of Arbeloa is just stupid as he will probably go this year for 4-5, if he had another year we may have got 7-8.

  18. good point jebhistoric .......plus sell the player wich LFC don't need no more and take some money : leiva ,pennant ,vororin ,dosena ,itanje ,....and buy benzema ,ireland......or d.villa ,d.silva

From lenny m, on Tue 30 Jun 10:45AM
  19. It would be devastating for Alonso to leave as there is no stand out replacement. In the event of him leaving i think the solution would be to bring in an experienced head such as Viera, Borrowski, Frings or Mehmet Aurelio and then concentrate on nuturing a starlet such as Lucas or Spearing. Meanwhile the cash could be used to provide a better second sriker or winger such as Silva. That way the team could still improve just not immediately in the same area.

From Hobitez, on Tue 30 Jun 10:45AM
  20. Well said Donal S, Completely agree!! Here's to a good old fashioned scrap!!!! May the best team win!!!
