Wimbledon - Roddick survives tough Hewitt clash

Eurosport - Wed, 01 Jul 21:12:00 2009

Sixth seed Andy Roddick brought former champion Lleyton Hewitt's fine Wimbledon run to an end with an energy-sapping 6-3 6-7(10) 7-6(1) 4-6 6-4 quarter-final victory on Court One.

Hewitt, showing the determination and guts which helped him to the title at the All England Club in 2002, refused to lie down, twice coming from a set down before the 26-year-old American finally ended his challenge.

"I think there's a lot of respect there, we used to get into it a bit when we were younger. I think we've earned each other's respect," Roddick said in a courtside interview.

"Now we're just a couple of old married dudes, maybe we've grown up a little bit."

Roddick looked on course for a straightforward victory after taking the opening set in 27 minutes, but Hewitt - roared on by the green and gold clad Fanatics on a sun-kissed Court One - saved three set points in the second set tiebreak before levelling the match 12-10.

Roddick restored his lead with a 7-1 win in the third set tie-break but again Hewitt, who at one point whacked his left thigh with racket in an attempt to shake off a niggle, came back to take it to a decider.

The American, a two-time finalist here, made the crucial break in game nine of the decider and held serve when Hewitt dumped a forehand volley long to claim victory after a three hour 50 minute shootout.

He will play third seed Andy Murray for a place in Sunday's final, after the Scot eased past Spanish wildcard Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-5 6-3 6-2.

  1. aus11123 agree 100%. Your serve is just a part of your game and if your are a professional you need to make each part of your game as good as you possibly can. Roddick has this almighty service, he did one yesterday at 140 mph, now that is quick.

Great game though yesterday, we were lucky to such a great piece of entertainment and the other game was brilliant too.

  2. daniel_ong77 may want to reconsider Roddick-Hewitt match and his issue with Roddick's use of Aces. Review the match from the point of view that two seasoned champions met on the Wimbledon grass and actually played an exciting game of solid tennis, something that doesn't often occur in the new-age tennis world of blood sport. Haas and Djokovic came very close too. Sorry there were no knee-bindings and wrist clamps on display to warm the cockles of your gladiator heart...just great mastry from both Hewitt and Roddick.

  4. Nice one Stiffler!! I thought Stiffler had thrown it away at the end of the fourth, but looks like he had the staying power after all. Finally in this tournament a proper challenge for Murray -although Wawrinka (sp?) did work him very hard.

    Andy who????
both of them.... because i'm after how they play tennis.

  7. I was at Wimbledon yesterday and i got to see this match and Haas v Djokovich, they were both great games and it was a real pleasure to have a day of such great tennis.

Both these players are at the end of their careers now and I don't think either of them are gonna win any more slams. But Roddick's serve is a awesome weapon and Hewitt's doggedness is also great to watch. So we will see, I generally get my predictions wrong anyway. Just before Roddick broke the Hewitt serve in the 1st set I turned to my missus and said looks like a tie-break then!

I was a neutral but because it was such a close game I never went over to either player's side, which I normally do during match either live or on the TV.

A post below criticises Roddick saying all he is the serve. Well what a load of rubbish, bl00dy armchair experts.

  8. #23, i disagree with you, hard serve is just a part of his game just like gonzo have a big forehand, u cannot say if he dont have that forehand he useless, LOL devine useless for me just for fun, Roddick made it to the semis and he already had some tough opponents where is serve doesnt work that well, so he played groundstrokes, not like Karlovic, hes an example of just serving and cannot play a point more than 5 shots so Andy is doing really well.
(boring - LOL than you go out and play with andy, i guess it would be 6-0 6-0 6-0, 36 aces is equal to 9 service games and he breaks you all the time so...) =]

    From aus11123, on Thu 2 Jul 11:44AM
  9. otez83, Lleyton is one of the best returners in the world and if Andy had been playing many others he would have had even more aces. Big problem for Lleyton was his own serve
which was pretty awful at the beginning of the match and in the last set. Anyway it was just great to see Lleyton back to his old self after his 'op and proving that he's still a top 10 player.

  10. Roddick is useless without his serve 47 aces is about 12 games. thats a lot

  11. Considering his injury at Queens,Roddick is playing some great tennis. There's more to his game than a huge serve, which he showed last night. Thanks to both him and Hewitt for giving the fans there and on TV one hell of a match to watch!!

  12. no 23. actually for a big server Andy Roddick has a decent game, he also has a good forehand, reliable backhand and can run around the court at a good pace.
the really boring servers are karlovic and well ivanisevic, who as you may recall actually won a wimbledon title by serving and then just standing there holding out his racket on the off chance that it might connect with a ball.

  13. GOOD TO SEE THE IRRELEVANT,BAD LANGUAGE SLANGING MATCHES SEEM TO HAVE STOPPED AND WE CAN TALK ABOUT TENNIS AGAIN.
THE HEWITT/RODDICK GAME WAS EXCITING TO WATCH EVEN IF RODDICK'S ACES TOOK THE THRILL OUT OF RALLIES.
THE TWO ANDYS PROMISES TO BE A GREAT GAME BUT AS A BRIT I SHALL BE ROOTING FOR OUR ANDY.BUT WHATEVER THE OUTCOME HIS FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT..TIME TO RENAME HENMAN HILL TO MURRAYS MOUNT?

I am really amazed with your analysis. I am actually now thinking which one I would choose. I force my body to do the mad run and the end of the day I only play tennis for 5 years but with 6 Grand Slam Title (as Nadal did). Or I do not force my body that much so I can play tennis for 10-11 years but end up with 1 Grand Slam Title only. It is very interesting for me to think about this :-)

I really want Roddick to beat Murray cuz Murry is an annoying Scottish @#$%
But don't care who wins :) Roddick or Federer

  18. stine147: I couldn't agree more with you. I'm also a Federer fan but I have a great respect for Nadal. He's a humble person and a great player. But since the first time I saw him play, I said to myself: this guy will have problems sooner or later because of the way he plays. Ok, he's young but the way he runs like a madman he must always be in great shape. Most of his game is about muscles and physical condition. And this has some risks. Some times the body can't take it and see what happened to him. I don't think we'll ever see Nadal as he has been so far. If he continues to submit himself to this physical effort every time he plays he'll get into trouble from time to time.

if you saw this game you would see that roddick s ,game was to try to make hewit play the back ,if you follow murray ,you then know roddic dosent have to make him play the back thats all he dose , murry dosent play good against this type of playing he shown it 2 games a go a gainst a simular styal of a player

  20. katy.hume, 45 aces to be more precise! That's remarkable but not all in a tennis match. Of course, it would be boring if a match were nothing but aces. There's something very important though. The number of aces also depends on the opponent's capacity to catch the serve. Had Roddick played against Federer and you can be sure he wouldn't have done so many aces. This leads to the question: will Mrray be able to fight against Roddick's aces? If he does he'll win, otherwise he'll lose.
