Nick Barmby has urged his former Liverpool and England team-mate Michael Owen to join him at Hull.
Owen, the country's fourth-highest goalscorer, becomes a high-profile free agent on Wednesday following the expiration of his Newcastle contract.
The 29-year-old ex-Real Madrid striker is likely to attract offers from across Europe but Hull are one of the few English clubs to have publicly declared their interest so far.
Barmby and Owen played in the same Liverpool side that won a cup treble in 2001 and were also together in the England team that memorably thrashed Germany 5-1 later that year.
And Barmby said: "He is a wonderful footballer and it is fantastic for the club to be linked with these players. I'm not sure whether we are close to a deal or close to talking - but that would be fantastic.
"He is 29, still has a burning desire to be in a World Cup squad and whoever gets him - and hopefully it will be us - will have a great asset. It's Michael's decision but it would be fantastic for us and our fans to have someone like him playing for this club."

'Please get your facts right'? Micheal Owen is a disgrace to professional football! What planet?

Who said we are a big club; certainly not us fans!

Cameron W - Newcastle are not embarrassed; they are Embarrassing. Big clubs dont play in the second division!
Hey Nicky, If Owen joines you at Hull, wont someone have to make way for him.
'Owen, the country's fourth-highest goalscorer, becomes a high-profile free agent on Wednesday following the expiration of his Newcastle contract.'
In other words, he is no longer (thank God) a Newcastle United player; so can Yahoo/Eurosport please tell me what this story has got to do with NUFC!
Keep this waster off our pages; we are embarrassed just to be linked with this disgrace to professional football!

Good player when he isn't injured but then again when is he not? I think his good times are gone. If he did sign for Hull i can see him only signing for a year because he will know after that year when Hull get relegated he will be able to look for another club. Shame he left Liverpool for money. It has come back to bite him on the bum now though..
It takes a hell of a lot of imagination sllowmail
barmby so does every nufc supporter!!!
Michael Owen has been diagnosed with gender identity disorder and will soon be having a sex change. He is, however, looking at things from a positive stance and having trials with the England women's national team, so desperate is he to wear the Three Lions skirt ( sorry - I mean shirt ) again. Apparently Fabio Capello is not an advocate of playing top town tarts in the men's team. Reuters News Agency. Bootle
Just imagine how strong l'pool is if Owen plays for L'pool.
