Former Norwich striker Paul McVeigh could be in line for a surprise return to the club after starting pre-season training with the club on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old was a member of City`s Championship winning side in 2004 but is without a team after being released by Luton last month.
Canaries boss Bryan Gunn has described the move as an "open ended" arrangement, but admitted that if McVeigh impresses there may be a more permanent contract available.
"He will be out there with the lads and he's been involved in the fitness testing in the last couple of days as well," Gunn told the Norwich Evening News.
"It's open ended. Paul and I had a chat during the summer and he told me about his contractual situation. I said 'Come in and join us for pre-season'. There are no strings attached either way but if he impresses not only me, but the other coaches, who knows?
"It gives Paul an opportunity to keep his fitness going. I'm sure he'll be speaking to other clubs and other managers and he's probably got an agent working for him as well. He's living locally so it does no harm and it helps us in terms of numbers, in terms of the training."

Another useless dydo, never mind I hear gunn will be signing a new keeper and a striker soon,CV must read, been everywhere, achieved nothing, will take low wages, and must be free or very cheap, whats the odds on Gunn getting the boot before xmas, must be bet of the decade, what a fool.
i for 1 would welcome him back to club,he has the experience at this level which gunn seems to be going for, dont hesitate, sign him up
Conference side???? The only reason Luton were relegated lastyear was because of the unreasonable penalising actions of the football league. I can accept 10 point deductions for going bust (bet a premier league club wouldn't be penalised though!!). But the rest for things that had happened before they went bust?? 30 points??? They were doomed before they kicked a ball.
I think what Gunn has said is very fair - he has to impress not just him, but the rest of the staff and it's not costing City anything, indeed it might actually be helping to make up numbers in training.
It will be interesting to see how things develop - these sorts of things are getting more common and must be for the good of both the players and the club - it beats costly loans and hit/miss transfers. The only looser is the extra grass the player uses up in training!
It probably won't work out at City but perhaps it will give McVeigh the fitness to get a club elsewhere - who wants to be chucked out of a job and onto the scrap heap with no prospect of a future in what you are reasonably good at - he might not get a contract with a league club, but at least he is trying.
Does this show the calibree of players Norwich are now after? Players released by conference teams..
