Surman refuses to preach on Saints

Wolves` new signing Andrew Surman insists Southampton did not push him out of the door at St Mary`s but admitted the troubled club`s plight did force his hand.

The 22-year-old, who started his career with Saints as a trainee, became the second new arrival through the doors at Wolves` Compton training headquarters in as many days when he penned a three-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.

Hot on the heels of Kevin Doyle`s record arrival, the left-sided England Under-21 midfielder signed for the Barclays Premier League new boys in a deal believed to worth around £1.2million.

"It was a big decision but obviously your hand is forced a little bit more because of the state the club`s in," he said. "Southampton didn`t force me out but being relegated to League One, and then a club like Wolves coming in for me, it made the decision a little bit easier.

"I`ve been a Southampton supporter since I was young, my family are from Southampton, my girlfriend's from Southampton, so it was difficult. But you`ve got to look after your career and move forward."

He continued: "It's a massive contrast - one side has just been relegated to League One with a 10-point deficit and I`m coming to a side that`s riding the crest of a wave, that stayed top of the Championship for most of last season and is now pushing to do well in the Premier League."
