TENNIS 2007 Jelena Jankovic - 0

Jankovic, playing in her first match since losing to Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli in the Wimbledon fourth round, was ruthless in her disposal of world number 86 King.

"It was my first match since I came back from vacation and I'm still jetlagged so it was tough, but it was a good effort overall," Jankovic said.

"I focused on trying to get used to the atmosphere and the ball. I had a cup of coffee before coming on court and ended up moving well. I hope I'll get better and better."

Sania Mirza, beaten in straight sets by Anna Chakvetadze in the Stanford final last week, also reached the third round upsetting 12th seed Shahar Peer 6-3 4-6 6-2.

Mirza, who uncharacteristically used the serve and volley tactic to defeat her doubles partner, set out to keep the rallies short claiming she was still tired from her Stanford heroics the week before.

"I really didn't want to spend so much time on the court," she said. "We all know that [Peer] is one of the best on the Tour at running down shots.

"If I keep hitting and ripping from behind the baseline, she's going to keep tracking down balls."

"I'm happy because it was a very tough first-round match," Mirza said. "But we both are not happy because we are friends, and it's hard to play a friend."

Wimbledon finalist, and fifth seed, Bartoli stuttered at the beginning of her first match since losing to Venus Williams at the All England Club but recovered in the second set to beat Aiko Nakamura 7-6 6-1.

The Frenchwoman admitted that players were approaching a match with her a little differently since her maiden grand slam final appearance earlier this month.

"Anytime you play someone who reaches a grand slam final, they have a target on their back," she said. "Now some players feel like they have nothing to lose against me but I like the challenge."

Another player making their first appearance was seventh seed Martina Hingis who was forced to battle hard during her first set before subduing Dutch teenager Michaella Krajicek 7-5 6-2.

The former world number one let a 5-1 lead in the opening set slip, but Krajicek could not maintain her standard and missed an easy volley at 5-5 0-30 allowing Hingis to regain control of the match.

"This is the first time I feel like myself since March," said Hingis. "I feel fresh and motivated again."

Nadia Petrova also came through her second round match beating compatriot Elena Bovina 6-3 7-5.

"She is not an easy player to play in the first round," the fourth seed said. "But overall I'm happy on what I did on the court."
