Southampton midfielder Jhon Viafara has returned to his native Columbia after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent.The 29-year-old, whose wife Luz gave birth to son Jones a month ago, has moved back to South America citing homesickness as the main reason for his decision to leave St Mary's.

Viafara told the club's official website: "It has been a very difficult time for me because my wife is back home alone with the new baby and our daughter. I have been under a lot of pressure.

"It is not easy for her and I want to be with her so the club have kindly agreed to let me go. It is disappointing in some ways because I really do feel Southampton can have a good season."

Saints plc chairman Rupert Lowe said: "We understand Jhon wanting to be with his family and the last few weeks have been very difficult for him. We wish him well back in Columbia with his young family."
