Vale boss hopeful over defence

Fri 01 Aug, 04:00 PM

Port Vale manager Lee Sinnott hopes to have solved his side's defensive frailties before the new season begins against Luton on August 9.Vale have signed defenders Sam Stockley from Wycombe and John McCombe from Hereford, with Lee Collins also joining on a six-month loan from Wolves.

Sinnott believes they need time together to gel as a unit, and told The Sentinel: "If you look at the defensive performance the other night (in the 2-0 friendly defeat) against Doncaster, a team that moved the ball around very well, I thought we coped well - in open play, they didn't really cause us a problem.

"But it was two goals from set-pieces, which we were very good at coping with last season, and that needs to be looked at. But when you've brought a lot of personnel into the club, it takes a lot of time to bed them in to the way we defend."
