Cincinnati Masters - Federer on the brink

Eurosport - Fri, 01 Aug 20:43:00 2008

Roger Federer could lose his world number one ranking to Rafael Nadal after being beaten 7-6 (6) 4-6 7-6 (5) by Croatian Ivo Karlovic in the third round of the Cincinnati Masters.

TENNIS Cincinnati Masters Roger Federer lost to Ivo Karlovic - 0

The defending champion, who has held the world number one ranking for a record 236 straight weeks, will lose the top spot to the French Open and Wimbledon champion if Nadal can win the title on Sunday.

Nadal moved into the quarter-finals of the event with a 6-4 7-6(0) victory over Tommy Haas of Germany.

Federer, who lost his opening match at last week's Toronto Masters to Gilles Simon, now heads into the Beijing Olympics and his US Open title defence with a fresh set of concerns.

He has not won a Grand Slam title this year and risks failing to collect a major trophy for the first time since he won his first of five Wimbledon titles in 2003.

The Swiss, who turns 27-years-old as the Olympics get underway with the opening ceremony on August 8, has said that winning the gold medal in Beijing is his main target for the season.

Federer, who was nearly upset by American hopeful Robby Ginepri in the second round, had not lost a match to the six-foot-nine Karlovic in six previous meetings.

But the big-serving Croatian took advantage of the Swiss's poor form by hitting 22 aces to claim one of the biggest wins of his career.

Neither man was able to earn a break point in a tight opening set and Federer, who had won eight out of nine tie-breaks against Karlovic in the past, looked in a decent position as it headed to a breaker.

At 6-5 Federer saved set point with a forehand winner, but the Swiss handed Karlovic a second with a forehand error that was called in by the umpire but overruled when the Croatian used a Hawk-Eye instant replay challenge.

The 29-year-old, who led the ATP Tour with more than 1,000 aces last season, confirmed on his second chance with a booming forehand into the corner that prompted the Federer miss.

After the two men traded their very first break chances of the match at the start of the second set, Federer finally went ahead with a break of serve in the fifth game.

The rest of the match went comfortably with serve until the decisive third set tie-break.

After starting the second breaker with his 21st ace of the match, Karlovic collected a quick mini-break to take the edge.

He maintained his advantage to set up a triple match point at 6-3, and though Federer was able to save the first two, the Croatian ended the match on his first chance on serve with a second-serve winner out wide.

The unseeded Karlovic now faces German Philipp Kohlschreiber for a place in the semi-finals after the German beat Sweden's Robin Soderling 7-6 (4) 5-7 7-6 (8).

i'd have to agree with you. it's the media hype, really. and it's been a true turn-off for me when it comes to Nadal becoming nr 1, Federer losing, drama, drama, drama....

    take care!
and evidently, may the best guy win!

  5. Hello, everyone. I was just watching the match between Lapentti and Nadal... I hate to say it, Lapentti plays such enjoyable tennis, I almost wished he'd have gone through.

Two things I can't appreciate: media and commentators thrashing (oh, yes, that's the word) of Federer, combined with this... this never-ending buzz around Rafael Nadal's superpowers. Too much is enough, I think. On what brink does Roger stand, actually? I mean, does it hurt? He deserves to lose the top spot, doesn't he? Finished? I think not. It's a good thing young stars catch up with him, but I wonder if ever he should learn from it. What really pisses me off is his attitude towards himself. Roger, are you there? You're so great, enjoy your tennis for once. Glory is not made of A+ results, but rather of passion, I think. The only crumbles that fall from behind your composed and controlled figure tell on pride. There's too much of that and too little of what made your fans.

Nadal is not a God, I wish everyone just gave the guy a break. In fact, he's still so raw in certain aspects, let's not toy with words. There's a lot more to see from him, if he stays as intelligent and focused as ever. Right now, his tennis is somewhat flawed still. On the other hand, compliments don't always help - see Fed's case. He's a victim of his legend and he lives, or used to live, off praise. The press are the press, no doubt, and his weakness is cracking under that particular pressure. It shouldn't matter what people speculate about, nor how they do that. It shouldn't be dramatic that you play poorly, as long as you take it like a man and make the best of defeat.

Djokovic used to talk much. He suffered shock defeats, grinded teeth and walked away from it. I heard he plays tennis, lately. That's a lesson others might want to learn from, and fast. I'd hate to be right about Roger. His losing streak made him speak like a sore loser. It's just life, get better and results will show. And I truly hope they will.

  6. I often laugh when i hear Fed compared to Pistol Pete, Sampras had much tougher competition when he played.
He had Agassi, Rafter, Edberg, Chang, Courier and the emergence of Safin and Hewitt later on and even Phillipousis was a danger back then.
Federer while being a very good player has not had anywhere near the tough competition that Pete had.
It is shame that neither have been able to win the French Open but that is another story.

  8. federer is not the best ever because he is not playing best players since 2004, and now im glad(since nadal and djokovic emerged) he's in a real battle and where he is now? let me add this, he's not man enough to accept defeats, he think he is the tennis god but he's not! shame on him

  11. When/If a player becomes too good to have a coach in an individual sport, I guess it's time to consider retirement. Losing the No. 1 spot should do Federer a lot of good if humility is one of his strong atributes. Most of the chasing pack have made incredible progress which Federer must appreciate and respect. Carrying on with the attitude that once he plays his usual game he will win is no longer true. Each opponent has to be analysed and suitable tactics planned and executed. Who ever thought a clay court specialist could win Wimbledon? With the right attitude, even Federer could win the French Open.

Nadal was injured pretty bad back then (AO)! That was the reason which allowed Tsonga to beat Nadal!

  18. Well done Ivo Karlovic!! Itīs high time that somebody knocks Federer out of another tournament because until now it was only possible if he was playing against the ATP Numbers 2 or 3. Now finally most players have learnt not to have too much fear and respect in favour of the No 1 in tennis because then you lose.
Luckily now some players start making hard games for Federer rather than giving them away in the cheap as it used to be before because of Federerīs mind games and fear factor and not because he is a brilliant player like Nadal is though well an impressive one to judge by the results.
Somebody said Federer is and will be the greatest tennis player this sport has ever seen and Nadal will be just a short lived moment into the No 1.SO WHAT?
Well WHO CARES now? Just enjoy while it lasts. And besides Nadal has eclipsed and blistered Federer ever since Federer started being No1 and still has no Roland Garros!!! That's pathetic!! 14 games to 6!!!
So that means only one thing to me he, RF will never be better than Nadal even if Nadal is not interested in winning all his games, becoming No 1 or especializing in all surface types.
Nadal does not like losing but if he does he comes back stronger so watch out Mr Tsonga and others next time your luck might run out you were just a fluke and an opportunist when a top player does not feel 100%.
Good luck to the new king of tennis to come up soon, therein I give you Mrrrrr Nadaaaaaal!!!
Finally it's about time for a new change of the guard. Vamooooos Nadal!!!!
