Barclays Premier League - Sunderland win at Celtic

Eurosport - Sat, 01 Aug 18:03:00 2009

Goals from Kieran Richardson and Kenwyne Jones were enough to give Sunderland a 2-1 victory over Celtic in their friendly encounter at Celtic Park.

FOOTBALL Kenwyne Jones Sunderland - 0

Richardson broke the deadlock with a composed finish after 12 minutes following a dreadful slip from Darren O'Dea as Steve Bruce's side capitalised on their early pressure.

Jones (pictured), who had looked a persistent threat in his lone-striking role, doubled the Black Cats' lead in the 54th minute, converting a free header to score with ease.

Celtic boss Tony Mowbray made a host of second-half changes, but it was Marc Crosas who remained on the field long enough to narrow the deficit with a clinical finish in the 69th minute.

Fraizer Campbell entered the fray for Sunderland at the expense of Jones in the second half, but no further drama followed as the flurry of substitutions gave the match a fragmented finish.

Richardson was a sprightly presence playing off Jones in what represented Bruce's new-look forward line, with Campbell set to provide stiff competition.

It was a delightful finish from the former Manchester United midfielder, who gave Lucasz Zaluska the eyes to send the 'keeper to ground before lifting the ball into the net with aplomb.

As early as the seventh minute, Jones had a clear-cut opportunity to open the scoring, but the imposing striker headed over the bar after the bright Andy Reid had floated a delightful cross up to him at the back post.

Danny Collins stole in at the back post from another exquisite delivery from Reid which beat Glenn Loovens in its flight in the 15th minute, but the defender headed wide.

Reid then had a shot of his own from the edge of the area which drifted narrowly wide after Jones knocked the ball down into his path two minutes later.

Scott Brown was a powerful presence for Celtic in midfield and he hung a probing cross up to Koki Mizuno, but the winger had his header deflected wide for a corner.

At the other end Jordan Henderson rattled the bar with a thunderous volley from the edge of the area on the stroke of half-time and showed fine technique to comprehensively beat the dive of Zaluska.

As the second half developed and further substitutions were made, Celtic pushed purposefully for an equaliser but to no avail.

After Crosas's crisp finish, substitute Scott McDonald had the best chance to level with a dreadful miss from close range after fine work from fellow replacement Georgios Samaras.

The Greek swivelled and crossed from the by-line and inexplicably his strike partner contrived to put his header wide of Martin Fulop's unguarded net.

Both managers will have been content with their side's fitness and desire, but Bruce will be the more buoyant with the progress of his squad.

Well the short answer is yes, he could have scored a Gerry in a friendly against a pub team in the fizzy league. which in turn would have given him a "smugness" only rivaled by Noel Coward walking down the Prison steps in the Italian Job.

  14. Gary S, (56) You are totally in dreamland if you think La Liga is streets ahead of the EPL. Count the number of EPL teams in the last four of the CL, and compare it to LL. Answer 3-1. Real Madrid stuffed by Liverpool; Barcelona very lucky against Chelsea. La Liga is very similar to the SPL. Two good teams, and the rest are s*ite. Look again at the EPL. Four teams who consistently occupy the top four places, with about seven more teams threatening to displace one of them. THAT is why the EPL is the best league in the world.

In the future, historians will make England responsible for the destruction of Western Civilization. By allying themselves with the Soviets and the Yanks to fight against Germany, they initiated the long, slow death of European civilization. England, like America, is now full of foreigners. It will become a brown country, and the rest of Europe will also be overrun by foreigners - all in the name of multi-culturalism.

The greatest civilization on earth will be destroyed. England and America will be cursed by future generation of whites, who will find themselves outnumbered, abused, enslaved, and humiliated in their own countries. Hitler will be viewed as the last white hero who tried to stop exactly that from happening.
