Lampard pleads for England unity

Mon 01 Sep, 07:30 PM

Frank Lampard hopes England fans will get behind Fabio Capello's side when they face Andorra at Barcelona's Olympic Stadium on Saturday.Injury ensured Lampard was only a spectator 17 months ago when Steve McClaren's team took on the part-timers of Andorra in March last year.

It meant the Chelsea star was able to take in the full venom of supporters' abuse as England laboured through a goalless first half.

Eventually, Steven Gerrard's double and a late effort from David Nugent gave the Three Lions victory, although it was not enough to spare McClaren, who suffered the worst vitriol anyone can remember being directed at the national team manager.

Few expect Fabio Capello to find himself in quite the same position.

But with the first grumblings of discontent being raised against the Italian following an unconvincing performance against the Czech Republic, there is certainly a feeling of restlessness beginning to develop among England fans.

But Lampard is hoping players, coaches and supporters are united in a common quest this weekend.

"We just the hope the fans who travel this time will be behind the team," he said.

"When we went there before it was not a good atmosphere. Anyone who was there will know that.

"I don't know if it was as bad as I can remember but when you play for England you have to be tough and able to handle atmospheres like that.

"The problem is games like that can be frustrating. Andorra are just going to sit in and try to make the score as respectable as they can.

"You need the crowd with you because when you are trying to break a team down, sometimes you have to wait a bit longer for a goal than you expect."

Nobody has any doubt England will emerge victorious.

It is the manner of that triumph that counts with Croatia to face in Zagreb four days later for a match that could define Capello's entire time as manager.

At least the former Juventus and Real Madrid boss had all his players on the team bus on Monday afternoon as they departed for their first training session.

Michael Owen's omission left England without the most prolific striker available to them, although at least Emile Heskey and Jermain Defoe proved they were in scoring form at the weekend.

Another player in buoyant mood was Jimmy Bullard, parachuted from Fulham's midfield into the England squad yesterday to the amazement of most observers.

At 29, it was felt the midfielder's chance of making the international stage had gone.

Capello has shown himself to be capable of brave decisions and Bullard could yet play a major role as the Italian finalises his plans for the double-header.

The slight limp Lampard appeared to have when he left Stamford Bridge last night after Chelsea's draw with Tottenham did not appear to restrict him either.

And with Gerrard out, Lampard has a big role to fulfil, although he is eager to play down the suggestion.

"I don't know if there will be more onus on me," he said.

"I think the eyes are on all the team because we need to get results.

"It's not about individuals. The manager is very strong on that, it's about a team effort.

"We shouldn't single out any players. If people drop out we have a big enough squad to cope."

However, while Lampard was anxious to talk up the team ethic Capello is determined to instil at the expense of individuals, he had a very clear view of what England want from their opening two games.

While four points would be an acceptable haul for most, Lampard wants six.

"We take these games as a package and we want six points, simple as that," he said.

"Quite rightly, we are expected to beat Andorra.

"But those games
