Miller backed by Pressley

Mon 01 Sep, 06:30 PM

Steven Pressley - who signed for Danish club Randers on Monday - believes Kenny Miller can repeat his Old Firm goalscoring feats for Scotland.Scotland open their World Cup qualification campaign with an away double header against Macedonia and Iceland but Pressley feels Miller will join the squad brimming with confidence following his Old Firm double.

Miller opened his account in his second spell with Rangers with a brace in the 4-2 win over his former club Celtic at Parkhead.

And Scotland coach Pressley believes his dream double can only benefit the national team as they start their campaign to qualify for South Africa in 2010.

Pressley said: "I don't think anyone can question Kenny's performances for the national team.

"Over the course of the last few years he's performed to an exceptional standard with the national team.

"It'll be great to see him coming in full of confidence and hopefully we'll benefit from that over the two games ahead.

"Strikers scoring goals are always confident but we've had no reservations about Kenny and his performances have not suggested he's lacking in confidence for the national team.

"His performances for the national team have been of a real high quality.

"He's a good lad to have about the place and I'm sure he'll be in top form this week and will be looking forward to the weekend.

"It's good to have players at the top of their game and it benefits the national side. I'm sure Kenny will be full of confidence."

Miller's return to Ibrox was not welcomed by a section of the Rangers support because of his background with Celtic but Pressley is convinced he will win them round.

He said: "I was at the Rangers-Hearts game and I didn't think he received too bad a reception.

"He's handled it with a lot of dignity. Only performances and scoring goals can win the supporters over and I'm sure this weekend went a long way to doing that."

Meanwhile, Pressley has agreed a short term deal with Danish Super League outfit Randers FC and the 34-year-old revealed the lure of playing abroad was too strong to turn down.

Pressley, who was promoting City Building's team visit to Malawi, said: "I'd stated towards the end of last season that playing abroad very much interested me and I definitely wanted to experience that before the end of my career.

"As I'm getting on a little bit, time was running out.

"I looked in detail at the proposition and it very much excited me. The length of the contract is until their winter shutdown on December 7 but that suits me as my family can't go out there.

"So for both parties it's an ideal situation.

"I've checked them out and I'm aware of the Danish league, which is a very good standard.

"It'll be a real test for myself."

Pressley will be able to pass on knowledge to his former Celtic manager Gordon Strachan, who face Danish side Aalborg in the Champions League.

He said: "When Celtic are over there for their Champions League game it'll give me the opportunity to go and watch them.

"I'll help Gordon as much as I can as he was extremely good with myself as he gave me the opportunity to continue training there this season.

"So if I can help him in any way then I will."

Pressley insists the move will not affect his role with Scotland.

He said: "It's only on a part-time basis. Randers FC are aware of my position with the national team and will be very accommodating in respect of that."
