Shearer shocked by Owen omission

Mon 01 Sep, 09:23 AM

Alan Shearer admitted Michael Owen's omission from England's squad for the World Cup qualifiers with Croatia and Andorra came as a "big shock".Head coach Fabio Capello has named only four strikers - Wayne Rooney, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey and Theo Walcott - in his 23-man squad for matches on September 6 and 10.

Former Newcastle and England striker Shearer believes Capello may have made a mistake by not having the 28-year-old involved in his plans

"When you consider he has got a goal every two games it's a big shock," Shearer said on BBC's Match Of The Day Two programme.

"None of the other players have got a good goalscoring record at international level but Michael Owen has.

"He's the sort of player who, if you are 1-0 down to Croatia, you would want to come off the bench and get you a goal."

  4. Rooney is a good playmaker but not a good goalscorer, Defoe is not good in every match, Walcott has not done anything yet that we can call him a striker. He only dribbles like a mad horse. Heskey is a fine playmaker but only with certain players and the one man with whom Heskey has been linking perfectly is none other than Owen. And now that stupid Italian wants to put Owen aside. Capello should not have been England coach. England has gone from bad to worse since his arrival.

  5. Perhaps Wayne Rooney is not best suited to the job of lone striker/target man, that's true, but at International level it would be the other three named strikers I would be more concerned about!
