Windass desperate for Tigers start

Mon 01 Sep, 10:00 AM

Veteran Hull striker Dean Windass has pleaded with Tigers manager Phil Brown to give him the chance to start a Premier League match. The 39-year-old striker has only made one top-flight appearance after emerging off the bench in Saturday's 5-0 mauling at the hands of Wigan Athletic.

With age against him, some believe Windass is past his sell-by date to impress in England's top-flight, but the former Bradford City striker claims fitness is not a problem.

Windass understands Brown's reasons for going with Caleb Folan due to his pace, although the veteran forward does not think speed is useful unless the Tigers can find the back of the net.

"I'm gutted not to start," said Windass. "I can still run around and I'm still fitter than anyone else.

"If the manager wants to go for pace, that's fine, but sometimes you've got to go for a bit of quality in the final third as well.

"People upset me talking about me being 39. At the end of the day I can still run around. Maybe I'm not as quick as a few people, but what's the point of having blistering chances if you're missing chances.

"It's my job to score goals and if the chances come along I'm confident I can take them. But coming on for 20 minutes when you're 2-0 down, you don't get those chances."
