Premier League - SWP thrills on City return

Eurosport - Mon, 01 Sep 10:56:00 2008

Shaun Wright-Phillips paid off the first instalment of his transfer fee with a double to ease Manchester City to a 3-0 victory at Sunderland.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Manchester City Shaun Wright-Phillips - 0

The England international struck five minutes after the break and then again with 58 minutes gone to kill off the woeful Black Cats in Sunday's Premier League clash at the Stadium of Light.

Stephen Ireland had opened the scoring in first-half injury time and the home side never looked like dragging themselves back into the game.

Grant Leadbitter had come closest to breaking the deadlock for Roy Keane's men in the first half when he fired wide after seven minutes and then sent a dipping free-kick just over the bar 12 minutes later.

But Ireland was to give City the advantage at the break when he side-footed home from close range after the Black Cats had failed to deal with Michael Johnson's right-wing cross.

And soon after the restart, Johnson slipped the ball to Jo on the left side of the penalty area, and his firm low cross allowed Wright-Phillips to side-foot into the empty net with the home defence in tatters.

The game was effectively over within three minutes when Wright-Phillips ran on to Michael Ball's ball over the top and lifted a shot over the advancing Craig Gordon and into the net, with Phil Bardsley's efforts to clear proving in vain.

The result moved City up to second in the table, while Sunderland find themselves in 18th place.

  6. Just like to say well done SWP. I'm a Chelsea fan. It's a shame it didn't work out at the bridge, like to wish him all the best at Man City.
I went out for a drink with him last year when he was in Dubai, he's a very humble down to earth guy.

  7. It's a shame for him that Arsenal don't need him! He would be much better off there! That's his true dream playing for Arsenal like his dad before him! He only went to Chelsea in a hope to improve his national team chances!

  16. tom k, I'm a blue! It was Lilo Lil liverpool (anthony g) who wasted comment space with his scumbag opinion. I totally agree with you. I dont know why the gravel-gob tit even takes up his time looking on City's page, obviously he must be worried with what happening down at Manchester's real football club!

  17. I'm not carried away but the signings Mark Hughes has brought in are exceptionally good, so good that Elano & Ben Hiam were on the bench today against Sunderland who we mauled 3-0 could have been more.

A couple more good signings by Hughsie today has cheered me up no end and maybe Mark has one more tucked away for tomorrow (hopefully) considering all the problems we have City are doing very nicely thankyou.

Welcome home SWP and well done my son, hope you have saved a couple more for Chelsea in a couple of weeks.

    Up The Blues.
