Eurosport - Tue, 01 Sep 07:35:00 2009

West Ham have signed defender Manuel Da Costa from Fiorentina, and allowed forward Savio Nsereko to move in the opposite direction.

Fiorentina director Pantaleo Corvino told Sky Italia the news as he announced that Zdravko Kuzmanovic joined Stuttgart.

"Da Costa is not yet a West Ham player," he said. "They asked for him and we have considered adding Savio to the negotiations, which could be seen as a long-term investment for Fiorentina."

Winger-striker Savio (pictured) only joined the Londoners in January from Brescia in a £9 million deal.

The 20-year-old played 10 times in the league last season, only starting once.

French-born Portugal centre-half Da Costa, 23, played one Serie A game for La Viola before joining Sampdoria on loan in January, where he also failed to impress.

The former PSV stopper is expected to cover for Matthew Upson and James Tomkins, with James Collins set to join Aston Villa.

The Hammers were previously reported to have rejected a bid from the Italian club for Upson.

Swiss-born Serbian midfielder Kuzmanovic asked for his move to go through, Corvino added.

  1. As West Ham fans you can be sure that nothing is ever simple, I run my own business and I believe that if I ran it the way WHUFC is run, well I would have folded years ago.
I am a realistic fan, I know we wont win the premiership, just good football, stay in the premiership and not to be treated like a mug will do for me.
If someone asks what period of football I have enjoyed at Upton Park, I still go back to Alan Devonshire, Ray Stewart, Billy Bonds, Big Alvin etc etc, we need the good times back, we have been a laughing stock for to long.
DUXBURY OUT, up the Hammers and lets get behind ZOLA and Clarke.

  2. Duxbury the rotten part of the apple..

From KCUFTHEU, on Thu 3 Sep 12:00PM
  3. Why is Duxbury paying Joorabchian £2m a year as 'transfer advisor'? What has Joorabchian got on Duxbury?

From Keith, on Thu 3 Sep 11:32AM
  4. This whole episode is a JOKE! I totally agree with all comments regarding the dodgy Duxbury dealings. I would love to know what this man is employed to do when the transfer window is NOT open, apart from fleece WHU!? I propose Duxbury is transferred out of the club and somebody with some FINANCIAL and FOOTBALL sense replaces him!!! IRONS!!

From Keith, on Wed 2 Sep 12:33PM
  5. What does Duxbury care, he showed last year he has contempt for managers concerns for team when he sold Ferdinand and McCarthy and provoked Curbs resignation. Now he lets Savio go for £6m loss, sells Collins, - and brings in probably ANOTHER two duds from Serie A. I've no doubt Zola is as perplexed as you or I. he wanted Mancini or Chamakh as strikers, and didnt get either. Meanwhile homegrown talent like Kyrel Reid and Sears are put out on loan. Sears is scoring goals for Warnock instead of US!

  6. what is it with the 9 mil he cost 5 mil rising too 9 after certain app goals etc. thay got a defender and cash for him with a 50% sell on thay will make there money back . little peed off we never got another striker though

  7. Im totally confused by this, we need a striker and they sell one. we dont need a dodgy defender we've got enough of them WHAT THE FUDGE IS HAPPENING.And where the fudge is ashton is he on holiday or what.

  8. Are the Icelanders in on the dodgy deals? Why havnt they stepped in to stop Duxbury's dodgy doings?
Hammers got stuffed by Joorabchian and Sheff U over Tevez, and then Duxbury/Icelanders took Joorabchian on the payroll as a 'transfer advisor' !! The Icelanders say they want to see costs kept down, so why let Duxbury offload player who cost £9m in exchange for a defender who couldnt cut it in Seria A and was rejected by two clubs? Suspend Duxbury and his deal, pending investigation of Duxbury's motives.
Zola has a history of NOT giving up on players (Cole etc), he could have made something of Savio and made it pay for Hammers. Once again we see the 'businessmen' screwing things up.

  9. well we all know about west ham and the players they buy and sell lets be fair chelsea and spurs the same only clever guy here is arsene but they won nothing for 5 years anyway west ham dont need to worry about buying and selling as there manager and coach the great stevie clarke will do them proud

  10. ANOTHER DODGY DEAL!! SOMETHING STINKS WITH THIS SAVIO SWAP!! WHY THE HELL PAY £9M FOR A STRIKER THEN SWAP HIM A FEW MONTHS LATER FOR A MEDIOCRE DEFENDER???

    From paulhartigan39, on Tue 1 Sep 12:00PM
  11. Quite agree with all the anti Duxbury talk...get rid now.
Will be sad to see 'Ginge' go, think hes the best CB we have, always gives 100% and gets stuck in.Why not let 'Gabbo' go, if we must get rid of someone.

    From withey.paul, on Tue 1 Sep 11:41AM
  12. Cut costs - start by SACKING DODGY DUXBURY ! He has chanelled around £40m out of the club one way or another; the pay off to Sheff U over Tevez, £10m for Freddy Lundeberg's one year at Hammers, £9m for Savio who he now lets go in exchange for mediocre defender, not to mention his 'fees'. Hanmmers CAN NOT AFFORD HIM - GET RID OF DUXBURY NOW !!

From Keith, on Tue 1 Sep 10:11AM
  13. Duxbury is the one Hammers should be geting rid of, he cost us over Tevez affair, he cost us £10m over Freddy Lundeburg short 'Hammers career', and now £9m over Savio, SACK HIM !!!!

From Keith, on Tue 1 Sep 9:34AM
  14. Sounds NUTS! Even if Savio not as good as they expected, to let him go like this for a mediocre defender who cant even look good in Italian league sounds completely nutty! Zola is not one to give up on players so easy, he gave Cole more than a good chance which eventually began to pay off, stuck with Boa Morte when everyone wanted to see the back of him. WHY LET £9m GO SO EASY? IS SAVIO THAT BAD?

From Keith, on Tue 1 Sep 9:31AM
  15. Duxbury's quote on the club site... policy to sell fringe players rather than first team regulars.

Great !! That means Collind and Upson are going NOWHERE Mr Duxbury !!

Secondly, why did we pay £9m for an unproven youngster who turned into a fringe player? FRINGE players usually cost bugger all !!

From Phil, on Mon 31 Aug 10:33PM
  16. Failed to impress / he cost 9 million !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Dough ??

    From royhill61, on Mon 31 Aug 9:07PM
  17. I wonder why has Savio played so little last year ? The fact they are willing to get rid of him obviously means he failed to impress so sending him out on loan is a good option.

From Morituri, on Mon 31 Aug 6:43PM
  18. I agree. Sounds odd letting a 9 million player leave in return for someone with a dodgy record. Hope it is not part of a big picture deal for Upson. All fans will be devastated if Upson is sold to balance the books. Things like that only happen whenever you are relegated! We are looking for a top 8 finish! Up the Irons.

  19. LETTING A SRIKER GO AND SIGNING A DEFENDER DOSN'T LOOK GOOD FOR UPSON AND COLLINS, LET HOPE THEY KNOW WHAT THERE DOING.
