Caddis claims McGeady was right to go over

Tue, 01 Sep 15:02:40 2009

Celtic defender Paul Caddis claims Aiden McGeady was a victim of his own "intelligence" when picking up his controversial second yellow card for simulation during the win over Hibernian at Easter Road.

The Republic of Ireland international, yellow-carded in the first half for a foul on former Celt Derek Riordan, was sent off just after the hour mark in Sunday's match following a challenge from Hibs defender Paul Hanlon.

"I think it was intelligence from Aiden," Caddis told Press Association Sport. "He went past three or four players and if he doesn't go down then he is going to get smashed.

Caddis feels the furore surrounding surrounding Arsenal star Eduardo, who has been charged by UEFA for his alleged dive to win a penalty against Celtic in their Champions League clash last Wednesday, could have been a factor in referee Dougie McDonald taking action against McGeady.

"To be honest I don't think it would have happened if we hadn't had the controversy with Eduardo," he said.

"It's all been blown out of proportion. If it happened a couple of weeks ago nothing would have happened but you can't blame Dougie McDonald.

"I don't know what he has seen and where he was positioned but it was right in front of me and I think it was a foul but these things happen."

  2. I didn't think you were being anything other than genuine old pal. I was merely following up my original posting. I have read several of your posts and can clearly see you are a level headed football fan. All these claims of cheating are wearing thin. Every man among us can find justification for dubious acts when they benefit our club. To cry foul when it goes against us,is an act of hypocrisy and I will not be party to it.

  3. sherbert d ..... I am sorry there is so much bile on these pages you have mistakely thought I was being sarcastic... PLease believe me I was genuinely complementing you and will do so again. Well posted sir!!!!!! I believe in getting tore in when I see nonsence being posted but I hope I have the ability to give credit where it is due, as in this case.

  4. rarkless my point is simple, I have celebrated goals that have come from dubious decisions,so therefore I have to take it on the chin when those decisions appear to go against us. Wether the ref was right or wrong does not come into it.

  6. ronbaird..................There was no bias towards any team in my reply to you. I stated what was obvious to any follower of the game. Arsenal were two up and in control of the game, the penalty, handy as it was, did not "determine" the result as you claimed. You appeared to me to be the one adopting a biased stance by using euphemisms for the McGeady incident and clear accusations regarding Eduardo. You claimed a third Hibs player was "steaming in to clatter him", thus tagging an illegal action on to the defenders intentions, when the boy clearly pulled out of the tackle showing in my opinion a determination to stay within the laws of the game. As to your question is Miller cheating if he goes down when nudged and he is at full speed, of course not that is a clear foul. If he goes down simulating then equally clearly he is cheating. The question of McGeady having nothing to gain is a red herring. The full back can be booked rendering his ability to make 50/50 tackles compromised, Celtic can pack the Hibs box and launch the resultant free kick the box with the possibility of a goal. Two advantages and I am sure you yourself could think of others. Remember Celtic scored against Motherwell from a corner that clearly should have been a bye kick and even more innocuously from a throw in, in a cup final, which should have gone to Rangers. Football is a dynamic game and every decision however trivial impacts on the next move and changes the course of the game forever. As for when players "START" to get red cards! that day is already here. I am happy with the strict application of the rules. We ask referees to be consistent and then moan when they are and our own team is affected. The common sense that a large number of fans call for translates into "Please ignore the rules when my favorites are concerned".

  8. I seen both incidents and have seen simillar incidents many times before. There are allways question marks surrounding the ethics of such acts. The fact is every team have suffered or gained an advantage through dubious decisions. It all balances out in the end. I thought at the time the ref got it wrong. I have seen nothing to change my mind, however if indeed it was a bad decision, then why are'nt the club appealling the decision? Perhaps there are no grounds for an appeal and I got it wrong.

  11. Guys we have got to look at the way football is going. It doesnt matter which team you support, just look at No Tackling, No Dribbling and No fast interactions. When these occur players will be tackled and touched and will be brought down, this is football. Sometimes when someone like Kenny Miller is at full speed he recieves a nudge or the player about to tackle pulls out, but Kenny sometimes takes a fall. Is that cheating. Definitely NO. It is a football incident. There was no gain for McGeady to go down but there was for Eduardo and thats the difference, if you cannot see the difference, then when your players start to get red cards you will.
BTW, I used Kenny so you could not call me biased as he has played for both Old Firm teams in the last few years.

From ronbaird, on Tue 1 Sep 8:04AM
  12. I'd like to point out that McGeady shouldve been sent off in the first half for bringing down Deek when he was the last man but never mind eh! Youknow I used to think Scottish officials were biased towards the old firm-theyre not theyre just f@**ing s@***e!!!

  13. Don't get me wrong, I don't blame him, there was a lot of money and prestige at stake and everyone knew that a goal from Arsenal would end any chance of Celtic turning the tie around with a miracle. I guess I just expect that professionals, especially ones with talent like that, to take the upper ground.

From gje, on Tue 1 Sep 2:35AM
  14. Eduardo was going to dive no matter how close the keeper came. He wasn't "getting out of the way" in any fashion, the keeper was covering the face of goal, not coming after him to give him a bashing. Eduardo is such a good player there's no way he didn't know exactly what he was doing. Don't make excuses, just expect better.

From gje, on Tue 1 Sep 2:28AM
  15. ronbaird ...........you are deluding yourself if you think that the penalty determined the result of the game. It was the gulf in class between the two teams which determined the result. In the McGeady situation the third player was not "steaming in to clatter him", the player clearly pulled out of the tackle. He dived, perfectly simple. Why! who knows and who cares the diving is the offence not his motive. Some years ago a Celtic full back while standing in the penalty box with not an opponent within 10 yards of him inexplicably reached up and punched the ball. Should the ref. have asked him why he had done it before he gave a penalty? No the offence had been committed and that is an end of the matter. Finally those prima donna's you mentioned ,did they not win the World Cup and the European Nations Cup recently.

From rarkless, on Tue 1 Sep 12:21AM
  16. ronbaird. At the end of the day, mcgready dived, he wasnt touched and was trying to con the ref into giving celtic a free kick and getting the other guy booked....................so he should have recieved the yellow card for cheating end of story, im a rangers fan and when a rangers player takes a dive i admit he should be booked too (unless against a foreign team ha). Its the only way to stop the cheats ruining the game, the only thing i that is wrong is refereeing consistancy, ie chris killen should have been booked for diving and trying to get the last hibs defender sent off................................PS MON THE GERSSSSSSSSSSSS

From jimmm, on Tue 1 Sep 12:10AM
  17. Eduardo DIVED in the penalty box to gain a penalty. End of story.
McGeady went down out on the touchline after dribbling past 2 defenders who had two goes at him and a 3rd steaming in to clatter him. If you watch his left foot it came down at an angle and he went over. This was a football situation and did NOT mean he DIVED.
To gain WHAT, should be asked.
If that is cheating, then every centre half clattering a forward and vice versa will also be deemed cheating. In fact if you foul you are potentially cheating. We have to get back to the premise this was a football situation and Eduardo was gaining a penalty which determines the outcome of a game.
All football will be played in slippers soon unless you look at your own team and recognise when your players are either tugging, pulling, feigning injury and diving as all teams do, then start moaning at your own players and see where that gets you.
Football will be for the prima donna's like the french and the rest of us can get on with a real game.

From ronbaird, on Mon 31 Aug 10:06PM
  18. And Eduardo getting out of the way of an impending clatter from the Celtic keeper is different how. Given the injury he suffered from a mistimed tackle last year how is he judged as a diver but McGeady is 'intellegent'. Last Wednesday's media frenzy is the cause of blowing things out of proportion. This happens every weekend, Rooney for example had booted the ball so far out of play before being clipped by Manuel Almunia and was still awarded a penalty for going down before any contact was made. Fair, consistent I don't think think so. A disgruntled Gooner!!!!
