Davies surprised by Dunne coup

Tue, 01 Sep 16:30:40 2009

Injured Aston Villa defender Curtis Davies admits he is "surprised" Manchester City are prepared to allow skipper Richard Dunne to leave Eastlands.

Dunne is expected to complete his £6million move to Villa on Tuesday providing he can agree a financial settlement with City where he has three years remaining of his contract.

Davies, who will see a specialist this week to determine whether he will require surgery, said: "I am surprised that City are edging him (Dunne) out of the door."

He added: "As much as they have made signings, Stephen Ireland has been one of their best players but, after him, Richard Dunne has to be up there.

"He has been a stalwart. He has played with a lot of different centre-halfs but he has always looked good. It is strange they are looking to let him go - but he would be a good addition here.

"There loss would be our gain because his experience is untold - but has still got enough in the tank to play for a few more years.

"He is an old style centre-half in being very solid and very strong.

"He is a decent reader of the game and wins a lot of headers but, at the same time, when the ball is at his feet, he can still pass it.

"He is a good footballer and his quality would add to our squad."

  3. Thanks for your service Dunne but you you are not quite what City need now. Hope you score own goals for Villa and become the number 1 own goal scorer. Good luck!

  4. Great shame we're letting him go, he had a poor season last year but that was 'cos our defence were always under pressure, but he's been one of the few consistently strong players in the side - I'd say he's probably one of the few genuine City players in the team ie not there for the cash!
Still, our loss your gain. I certainly wont boo him when he returns in claret/blue.

  7. Lee F,,No!No one can and no one will ever be able to!Its like the shroud of Turin, no one understands how it happened, their are lots oif theories, plenty of conspiracies, but all the scientific tests can't show how it happened!Although personally i think thats easier to understand than Heskeys career!

Villa are not looking good for a european place this season im afraid, the front runners outside the top 4 are looking strong this year, Villa must be hoping for a decent cup run and maybe get into europe via the cup route.

  10. Hi guys, Trivia Bonus Question.

Is Carlo ancelotti, david moyes, harry redknapp, sir alex ferguson & god damn it even Tony Pulis a far better manager/coach than the Fat Spanish Waiter?

I would say yes, he is rather C--r--a--p.

  11. I agree with Ian.Heskey hasn't done enough to justify a first team place, and just think back to when we had Gabby
playing alongside Big John Carew with Young terrifying defence's,class like that cannot be bought. The Moral of this story? If the Table isnt Broken,Dont call the Carpenter.

  12. 2&3. Agreed, but the strange thing is MON discovered this by default last season. When Carew was out and Heskey not yet in. He seems to have persevered much longer than needed with Heskey - who takes up all the positions Gabby might take at dead-balls and provided no worthwhile service to Gabby's pace in return. Maybe Heskey can strike up a different sort of pairing with Delfounseo and with Beye as a Chelsea style raiding full back. We don't need one of those in our first eleven either, where we have 2 wingers.

Clark was another revalation from the Villa reserves - but if you look at that team's results for the past 18 months they must be darned good to dish out the hidings they have to "bigger" teams reserve sides.

  13. 2 - Couldn't agree more. Sidwell in particular was fantastic. 4-3-3 is just a much better system for Villa - Milner and Ash have both got the work rates to make it work defensively and Gabi looks a different player when he is up front on his own.

  14. With the signing of Richard Dunne and Stephen Warnock, the obvious potential of young Clarke against Fulham and the retrun of Luke Young and Freddie Bouma, maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel regarding our defensive frailties - also just like to add how much more 'steel' there was in the midfield afainst Fulham - well played Nigel RK, Stan and Steve Sidwell.
