The £5.8 million summer signing from Manchester City has yet to make his competitive debut for Newcastle after fracturing a metatarsal during a pre-season friendly against Carlisle.
Barton had claimed he would be available for selection for Saturday's clash with Everton, but Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce has ruled out such a quick return, saying the 25-year-old will have to wait until after the upcoming international break to make his first appearance for the Magpies.
Allardyce said: "Joey Barton has got no chance for Everton on Sunday. It will be four or five weeks, or at least three or four reserve games."
The news comes on the same day as Michael Owen's return to Newcastle after a double operation on his groin, as Allardyce continues to struggle with a lengthy injury list which includes Shola Ameobi, Claudio Cacapa, Stephen Carr, Celestine Babayaro and Damien Duff.
