ATP Tour - Murray run ends in Paris quarters

Eurosport - Sat, 01 Nov 17:24:00 2008

Andy Murray's winning sequence ended in the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters as David Nalbandian moved into the last four with a 7-6 6-3 victory.

The Argentine will meet Russian Nikolay Davydenko in the last four on Saturday after he progressed when world number one Rafael Nadal retired with a thigh injury at the end of the first set of their quarter-final.

Nalbandian, 14th in the ATP Race, will qualify for the Masters Cup in Shanghai if he retains his Paris title.

"It's not my goal. I'm not thinking about Shanghai because we have the Davis Cup right after, so that's why," he said.

Nalbandian is scheduled to play the November 21-23 Davis Cupfinal with Argentina against Spain in Mar del Plata.

American James Blake was the first player to qualify for the semi-finals as he advanced when world number two Roger Federer pulled out with a back injury.

Murray, who won the Madrid Masters and the St Petersburg Open title this month, struggled with his first serve in the opening set and smashed his racket to the ground after being broken in the fourth game.

The Scot, however, converted his only break chance to draw level and picked up his game, trying to keep Nalbandian at bay with his slice.

But the Argentine, with a mix of cunning drop shots and powerful groundstrokes, took the tiebreak 7-3.

Nalbandian then shifted up another gear, breaking four times in the second set to wrap up victory in one hour and 43 minutes with yet another drop shot.

"I thought the standard of points were excellent. I'm obviously disappointed to lose, but I'm glad that I played against a guy as good as him and it took him playing a great match to beat me," said Murray.

  10. I have to admit, the dude have showing some great tennis the past few months but this comment before the game just shows how
    1) completely ridiculous the British sense of humor is (just assuming this is a joke, its gotta be, no one can talk that serious about mr Murray) or
    2) the lack of good tennisplayers of the years in this friggin country. As he he won some the past few months, but thats it. Nothing more nothing less.. And then this comment;

    - Murray is so hot right now; he is the hottest man in tennis. FACT. He should come with a health warning he is so hot. His racquets have been fitted with fire-proof grips - that's how hot the young Scot is.

    so I guess all hail and praises to the new Sportsgod of GB who has won a few matches....
