Andy Murray's winning sequence ended in the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters as David Nalbandian moved into the last four with a 7-6 6-3 victory.
The Argentine will meet Russian Nikolay Davydenko in the last four on Saturday after he progressed when world number one Rafael Nadal retired with a thigh injury at the end of the first set of their quarter-final.
Nalbandian, 14th in the ATP Race, will qualify for the Masters Cup in Shanghai if he retains his Paris title.
"It's not my goal. I'm not thinking about Shanghai because we have the Davis Cup right after, so that's why," he said.
Nalbandian is scheduled to play the November 21-23 Davis Cupfinal with Argentina against Spain in Mar del Plata.
American James Blake was the first player to qualify for the semi-finals as he advanced when world number two Roger Federer pulled out with a back injury.
Murray, who won the Madrid Masters and the St Petersburg Open title this month, struggled with his first serve in the opening set and smashed his racket to the ground after being broken in the fourth game.
The Scot, however, converted his only break chance to draw level and picked up his game, trying to keep Nalbandian at bay with his slice.
But the Argentine, with a mix of cunning drop shots and powerful groundstrokes, took the tiebreak 7-3.
Nalbandian then shifted up another gear, breaking four times in the second set to wrap up victory in one hour and 43 minutes with yet another drop shot.
"I thought the standard of points were excellent. I'm obviously disappointed to lose, but I'm glad that I played against a guy as good as him and it took him playing a great match to beat me," said Murray.

u cant win them all not everyone is unbeatable but he has showed that he can make a great comeback i think one day he will top the ranking
Isn't it proof a fact that Andy HAS a personality or what all this arguments here are about?:) Another fact : people who can't stand themselves in a mirror comment a lots about other's people appearance :) So if you would like to criticise somebody "face" , first, look at yourself - are you really so smart?:)
Thanks, Mo. I don't know about this week, but last week he beat No.150, Golubev or whatever his name is. So, there you are.

Murray should run ythe country he couldnt do a worse job than the Scotsman we have in charge well done Andy !!! great season keep it up
Stephen, everyone's allowed to slate - just depends on how intelligent your point is mr. and you have highlighted your intelligence perfectly - thanks for making us English look like backwoods bigots. Congratualtions \, you have been detected:-)
I have to admit, the dude have showing some great tennis the past few months but this comment before the game just shows how
1) completely ridiculous the British sense of humor is (just assuming this is a joke, its gotta be, no one can talk that serious about mr Murray) or
2) the lack of good tennisplayers of the years in this friggin country. As he he won some the past few months, but thats it. Nothing more nothing less.. And then this comment;
- Murray is so hot right now; he is the hottest man in tennis. FACT. He should come with a health warning he is so hot. His racquets have been fitted with fire-proof grips - that's how hot the young Scot is.
so I guess all hail and praises to the new Sportsgod of GB who has won a few matches....
-_-
haha I love seeing all these losers popping Murray. So from another Englishman - well done on a great season to Scotsman Andy Murray - looks like next season you'll be playing a bunch of sweaty yahoo couch potatoes, bring your ping-pong bat and let them use beach balls......and a laptop so they can write in here and complain when they lose...
nice one collin
Hey Ralph I actually like the Scottish people a lot as I am Welsh and we sometimes gang up on the English. Sorry about this, I love tennis but do not like Murray. I love football but do not like Keegan. I am actually 74 years old and bored with retirement so this keeps me going. I have done nothing of note in my life sorry, probably a bit jealous of the modern talent
He don't like England so why should we like him the P***t
hey jimmy stephen and collin go take a hike guys u r always so negative just keep quiet and stop embarrassing yourselves.
what have any of u ever achieved in your lives, tells about that it might just be a bit more interesting than the drivel u write on this blog
What is wrong with all you people always criticising Andy Murray. You Brits are so used to having losers, you cannot stand having winners,
I bet Murray is so much fun to be around, the miserable so and so. I took him to great heights to beat me so I am as great really. Never any congrats to the defeated or the winner. Personality of the Year my arse but there will be tennis fans to vote for him. Russell Brand has more going for him
yes love it told you jocks he would fall flat on his face, what a start to the week-end,thanks nalband, taught the jock a proper tennis lesson
Well done Andy, great season but time for a rest
WELL DONE NALBANDIAN! BUT I'D LIKE TO SEE BLAKE VS TSONGA IN THE FINAL FOR SURE!
