France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga boosted his Masters Cup hopes with a 5-7 6-4 7-6 victory over Andy Roddick in the Paris Masters quarter-finals.
The 13th seed must now win his semi-final against American James Blake, who can also qualify for the season-ending tournament in Shanghai, to maintain his qualification hopes.
However, Tsonga's victory has ended fellow Frenchman Gilles Simon's hopes of making the Shanghai event.
"I have my destiny in my hands," Tsonga said.
The Australian Open runner-up saved 10 break points in the second set before going on to defeat seventh seed Roddick on his fourth match point.
American Roddick started with a break before his opponent levelled at 4-4. Tsonga, though, was broken again in the 11th game.
Tsonga then broke serve in the 10th game to make it one set apiece.
Following an early exchange of breaks in the third, the Frenchman took the tiebreak 7-5.
Roddick was left to rue his missed chances in the second set.
"I definitely had more than enough chances tonight so this one will probably stick with me for a little bit," he said.
"Credit to him, he came up with probably six or seven volleys that were pretty tough on break points. He played very well."

After beating Roddick I think Tsonga can beat Blake too. I am tipping a Nalbandian-Tsonga final and the way these two guys are playing it's hard to pick a winner.
Is it only me or French crowd need a few good manner's lessons? It was painful to watch...
lol, i love all the bitter fans replying here!
Jo wilfred Tsonga is the new dawn of tennis in france.... allez le blanc
this is 4 u benji, tsonga is great u should be happy that new names are here in tennis .4 roddick his time is gone tsonga will always beat him even in us open
yup, i agree with danny_thang, nowadays, i noticed that french tennis players are so cocky and have the nerves to show attitude in the court, especially monfils, remember fellas this is a gentlemen's game. i know sometimes, we got so hyped-up and get competitive but never loose the essence of ths game, this is not basketball or football (soccer) that we can show off on court.
see the likes of yannik noah, santoro, forget, grosjean they keep their chins at a levela and tennis afficionados love them when they are playing on court......
Murray crashed against first decent challenger since the FED. Tsonga - dont make me laugh - there should be a special league starting with Tsonga and Bahgdadis - Monfils - and a few others.Roddick is due the end of season to join the Seniors or the geriatrics
tsonga win, nothing to be proud, home place then so wat..so cocky,arogant.......learnt more from roddick...when he broke the points, nvr show too much emotion....althought riddick lost but i very proud of him.....he play a very good match,i waiting them to play again at US OPEN,i wanted see how tsonga react in roddick home place....win is win but have to respect ur opponent too.....learnt more t s o n g a...shout here and there, like a monkey lost its way...
Jo congrats mate. keep the fire burning..
I love Tsonga the guy is so easy to like. On another note the French crowd today booing Nadal is a disgrace. the man has only been dominating RG for the last 5 years. and we all know nadal would never quit he was just hurt and didn't want to risk missing the Davis Cup final, BTW i'm a Federer fan saying this.
A well earned victory by the Frenchman.
As long as he is not injured, Tsonga can match with trhe best in business, but his problem is he never gets a full year of fitness..
TENNIS IS A BUMBANDIT'S GAME.
REAL MEN PLAY CROQUET.
Another spectacular display by Jo, he completly deserved to win this match. Roddick just isnt as good as Jo!
