World road champion Cadel Evans has signed a three-year deal to join BMC Racing from Silence-Lotto.
"A great opportunity has come for me to join a growing team of like-minded individuals at BMC," Evans said. "I look forward to working with the BMC group toward the same goals including the Tour de France. I see the BMC Racing Team as a growing but very well structured and organized team.
"Obviously, I would like to do better than my two second places at the Tour de France."
Evans, 32, came second in the 2007 and 2008 Tours and his new team said their ambitious recent signings made him think he could win a Grand Tour with them.
"Cadel heard about how our team was expanding by signing big-name riders like George Hincapie, Alessandro Ballan, Marcus Burghardt, Karsten Kroon and other strong racers," BMC Bicycles owner and BMC Racing co-owner Andy Rihs said.
"This news immediately fired him up with the idea of riding for such a flexible, engaged and passionate team."
Australian Evans joined his former team in 2005, when they were known as Davitamon-Lotto.
With them the former mountain biker won the 2006 Tour of Romandie and the 2007 UCI Pro Tour title, in addition to last year's road race win.

Pedro is completely right. No argue about that. Cadel and BMC after 5 y. in Lotto seems like a reasonable move for the ausie. Jurgen Van Den Broeck and Phillipe Gilbert's water carrier or a new deal certainly means new deal for him at least now when he could make good money from that. Regarding his chances for the grand tour victory in 2010, let sit and wait, but I stand same where Pedro lands his chances, maybe in the 4-5 guys behind AC, Andy or....WCH was a moment of his glory and he take advantage and make it happen. Congratulations.
@demi162. Actually I do find Cadel quite an interesting character and some of what I say is tongue-in-cheek, but I stand by most of what I say. I don't think winning the worlds is redemption for Cadel, necessarily. Like any single race, anything can happen, and he was in the right place at the right time - he rode very smartly and took advantage of Cancellara-induced panic behind. I do, however, think he's shafted Lotto - plain and simple...
The world championships is okay, but what else did he get? First stage of the Dauphine...the jeresy oro for a single day, the Maillot Combinada for a few days, and a handful of podiums.
Not bad, for a journeyman, but hardly a great season for an alleged GT winner.
Pedro, Cadel is on the way down? I wouldnt call winning the World's solo symtomatic of being 'on the way down'!!, on top of another season being amongst the best from start to finish, save for the third week of the Tour. You comment on Cadel as much as i do!! Come on, say you like Cadel, just a bit, admit it.
So long as Evans has stronger, zippier climbers around him in the team, he has a very, very decent chance of winning the TdF, riding the same size bikes. Without them, it will be a big no no (again!)
Evans is an average rider, he only follows he can never lead. He will finish 2010 TDF in 30th place let alone win it.
Take a look at the recent records of Evans and Ballan and you'll find them pretty similar. Maybe Evans will be riding for Alessandro. Good to see Big George's name, I love the guy.
theyve signed some very talented riders for next year and wont be just making up the numbers.
Cadel have two winning chances, the best one was in 2008, now he just dont have the pace, how can he beats Contador, Armstrong and Andy? Im not even talking in Wiggins, Nibali, Frank, i just dont see how, he have no leverage with this guys, Worst in TT, Worst in mountain, Worst in team work, how can he do it? miracle's? Cheating? HOW?
i think that he needed to change team...but BMC dosent look like they can give anymore help in the mountains as Lotto..but we need to wait and see.i think it will be a great 2010 for cycling..and lets hope for the best!!
"how can cadel not be a grand tour contender..hes come second twice!?! and both times by less than a minute."
He didn't have the balls to go off the front when he was a genuine contender, but now he's past his best, and finally tried to attack, he no longer has the legs, that's why.
While not being an Evans fan he still has 3 good years left to follow wheels. Who knows how he will do, but if he is following in Hincapie, Burghardt, Kroon and Ballan I think he has seasoned support riders who can team time trial as well as Lotto. Pesonally I think this addition bodes better for HIncapie and Ballan because it will allow them to continue to compete in all the major races without question since the Worlds jersey is part of their team.
I just can't see Cadel doing any better at BMC than he has at Lotto - he's just not quite good enought for the top step of the podium and some of the younger GC contenders coming through are just too good. Contador is way out in front and behind him there's a group of 4 or 5 that are at a level to compete for podium places. Evans is probably one of those riders, but he's on the way down and the others are on the way up.

BMC bikes are great, very fast and responsive, but they'll shake your teeth out! I was only joking really, most pro-tour bikes have very harsh rides or so I'm told Take Cav's Scott for example - all that extra carbon to allow it to cope with the forces he puts through it make it heavier than the model you can buy, and I'd imagine a lot less forgiving.
As for staying with Lotto, I think Cadel's probably made a good move, but I'm still not sure he's got the sand to be a Grand Tour winner. BMC are clearly making a big statement of intent, and given the amount they've spent they'll probably give Cadel more support than Lotto did, but will it do any good?? Who knows.
PS @paulandlyndsay, Saxo Bank ride Specialized bikes, not Giant. And, from memory, they were already pretty damned good, as QuickStep have been riding them for a while. Perhaps you meant TT bikes.
What's all this about BMC bikes - it seemed good enough for Phonak and Astana in past years?! Don't ride one myself, but they already have a pretty successful pro-continental team. Surely, they're just as good as Canyon???!!!
Classic. The indisputed king of anti-panache does it again. Having spent the best part of 5 years drawing a massive salary and winning nothing (of note), Evans finally gets a result and decides to use it (the rainbow jersey) as leverage to get a better deal. Hey presto, you have an ambitious ready-made bed fellow in BMC, who have deep pockets and a desire for wild cards to the big races. I would imagine, the rainbow jersey would deliver that, so is worth investing in (the jersey, that is, not Evans). To suggest that BMC will provide a better platform for TdF victory is ridiculous. Should've stayed at Lotto and done what he's best at - being Phillipe Gilbert's water-carrier.
I agree they need to build him a better bike than they sell at the minute. Last year when Saxo bank changed to Giant they promised to build them better bikes and we all know what Cancellara did this year.
This looks like becoming a real powerhouse of a team. This really could be Evans' chance, but the team are still going to have to gel together and ride as a serious unit in order to challenge Conty & Lance. Plus, Le Tour is a stage race and they are riding BMC bikes; lightning fast but the worst ride quality - maybe they'll be too beat-up by week three to contend!
