Former Argentina defender Fernando Caceres is in a coma after being shot in the head in what was believed to be an attempted robbery.

Caceres, who helped Argentina win the 1993 Copa America and played at the 1994 World Cup, was at the wheel of his BMW when he was shot in a possible attempted robbery, police sources said.

The 40-year-old, who was in intensive care, won an Argentine league title with River Plate in 1991 and the Copa del Rey in 1994 and European Cup Winners Cup in 1995 with Real Zaragoza.
