Andy Priaulx claimed victory in race one of the WTCC at Okayama from fellow BMW driver Joerg Mueller and Chevrolet's Robert Huff.
Heavy rain before the race meant the field started behind the safety car, and on lap three the safety car came into the pits and pole-sitter Gabriele Tarquini lead the field.
But the Italian went wide soon after, leaving Priaulx to go through and lead all the way to the chequered flag despite pressure from Mueller.
Tarquini undid past of his mistake as he managed to claw back fifth position behind team-mate and title rival Yvan Muller.
The other man in with a chance of lifting the title, Augusto Farfus, went off on the same corner as Tarquini but recovered well before passing Alain Menu to claim a crucial eighth place and keep his hopes of lifting the title alive.
