SPL - Rain claims Rangers game

The SPL game between Dundee United and Rangers at Tannadice was abandoned at half-time on account of a waterlogged pitch.

The game started in torrential rain and it did not ease through the first half.

United had the better of the chances, but Rangers were leading at the break thanks to Steven Davis' cool finish.

Referee Mike Tumilty conducted a pitch inspection at the interval and was left with no option but to call off the game.

"I was thinking about the players' safety," said Tumilty.

"Water was starting to lie on the pitch, the ball stopped rolling and the worry was having lots of players coming together, there could have been a serious injury.

"Towards the end of the half I started to become seriously concerned. Towards half-time it became almost impossible.

"Both managers were keen to get the game played but they both accepted the decision.

"It's disappointing for the fans but if something had happened in the second half it wouldn't have been fair to the supporters of either team."

It was an entertaining 45 minutes, with United impressing with their incisive attacking play.

Mihael Kovacevic went close on nine minutes, as his looping header beat Alan McGregor but saw his effort crash against the bar.

United passed up a great chance on 25 minutes, as Prince Buaben fired over from 16 yards following superb wing play from Jennison Williams.

The home side were made to rue their miss as Rangers edged ahead on the half-hour.

Sasa Papac dinked the ball back into the box with United pushing up from a corner and Davis came in from the right to tuck his shot beyond Nicky Weaver.

Unite responded well and Paul Dixon thudded a free-kick against the bar, but Rangers were ahead when the decision was taken to call off the game.

Rangers boss Walter Smith added: "It's disappointing for us, being 1-0 up, but it was probably the right decision I think.

"I don't think we can argue very much with it."
