WTCC drivers: Tough going in Japan

Eurosport - Sun, 01 Nov 10:31:00 2009

Okayama WTCC race winners Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus were relieved after aquaplaning their ways to victory for BMW.

2009 Okayama BMW Farfus Muller Priaulx - 0

Andy Priaulx (BMW): "There was a lot of standing water and Gabriele (Tarquini) was aquaplaning so I nearly followed him off the track. In those conditions you have to hope you can hang on. Joerg (Mueller) was always in my mirror (in race one) and if the race had been one lap longer he would have won."

Augusto Farfus (BMW): "The weekend started well and we had a good set-up. Then the rain came and mixed up the cars. As Andy (Priaulx) will know from race one, when you lead you are the first one to approach puddles where you can aquaplane. I had to focus and I am happy BMW has achieved two 1-2 results."

Yvan Muller (SEAT): "It has been a positive weekend for me after closing the gap from Gabriele (Tarquini) to two points but it has been bad for Gabriele and for SEAT in the manufacturers' championship. We knew we would struggle in the dry and thought we had a better chance in the wet so we were surprised we were not so good. "

Joerg Mueller (BMW): "I was shocked at the start of lap three as Rydell braked very late and crashed into my door. I thought my car would look like a banana but it was ok. I was aquaplaning but couldn't see the water as I was in Andy's (Priaulx) mist."

Robert Huff (Chevrolet): "In the first few laps it was impossible to see anything. I was braking according to what I could see out of my passenger window. Going from ninth to third (in the second race) is great and I'm happy to be on the podium even though I nearly threw it all away towards the end with a mistake."

Tom Coronel (Independent): "We were playing videos of rain dances on our laptops and it worked. It's good to score points and not lose my lead although I still think the independent title will be decided in Macau where there are double points."

Stefano d'Aste(Independent): "Winning the (independent) title would be very, very, very difficult because we have lost some opportunities this year. Yes, things will be difficult unless Tom (Coronel) and Félix (Porteiro) miss their flights to Macau!"

  1. If Farfus wins the championship this year it will be a travesty & will only go to show how poor the championship & other team's were this year.

I'm sure the organizers want to put on a good show for the sponsors & keep the title race open till the last race but Farfus should have been penalized after his move on Menu in race 1. Yes it was wet & slippey etc but it just goes to prove Farfus isn't a racer(crash bandit coot comes to mind), he seem to find it easier to push someone out of his way rather than overtake, which he has proved all his WTCC career.
