Hodgson staying grounded following shock win

Sun, 01 Nov 10:16:57 2009

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson insists he will not let his side get carried away following their impressive 3-1 home victory over Liverpool.

Goals from Bobby Zamora, Erik Nevland and Clint Dempsey condemned Rafael Benitez's side to their fifth Premier League defeat of the season and the visitors finished the game with nine men following the dismissals of Philipp Degen and Jamie Carragher.

Hodgson said: "We had to work hard to keep them at bay. They had more possession than us and at one stage I couldn't see us holding out.

"But we got closer to them in the second half. We started to create chances and took some of them. We're getting better as a team.

"We still have got a lot of work to do. I am preaching modesty and humility. To be in the Premier League and to be playing Liverpool and Manchester United and Chelsea is a wonderful achievement for Fulham.

"It is important to keep our feet on the ground and we will have to because this year European competition is a huge stretch on our resources."

  1. I was watching a Fulham game against Man U in 2008 at a bar here in Denver. On other tvs were SPL games featuring Rangers and Celtic. During the first half, a Celtic fan came over to me, wearing my Fulham jersey, and told me to hang in there Fulham will be fine. During the second half, from the other end of the bar, a Ranger fan came up to me and said he hoped Fulham stayed up that year. The Celtic fan called scholes a "rat-faced @#$%" and the Ranger fan seemed like he was disparaging Rooney judging soley by the anger in his voice (He was a little inebriated and had a thick Scottish accent so I couldn't really understand him).
That's probably the only time a Rangers fan and a Celtic fan ever agreed on any issue and it centered around Fulham.
A very respectable club Im proud to support here in the states.

  2. Fulham, win or lose, is a well-managed team. Hodgson had a lot of @#$% to dig through and it was truly a miracle a couple seasons back when they stayed up but now we see results. Fulham plays its passing game no matter who they are playing. Some weeks are bad and they lose. But when they play well, they hang with anyone. Since start of 08-09 season they have beaten all the top 4 except Chelsea whom they have tied multiple times.
Continuity is hard in today's sports world and this has the potential to fall apart at any transfer window. but for the moment I am proud to be a fan of Fulham, win or lose.

  3. Roy Hodgson is a real gentleman. I see him every now and then with his wife shopping at the Waitrose in Cobham.
I'm tempted to say 'Great job, Roy' but in the end I let him be. He's made a silk purse at the Cottage out of a proverbial sow's ear... Imagine what he would be capable of with a squad like Chelsea! Strange thing about Fulham (and I've been a fan since the Moore, Best and Marsh days, okay I lie, since the Jimmy Hill and Johnny Haynes days) they never get bad-mouthed like other clubs...
You hear people say how much they hate the Arsenal, or Chelsea, or Man U or Liverpool, but no one ever feels that antagonistically our fabulous little team. Come on Fulham!!!

  4. In recent years a so called lesser club (Reading, Hull) with greatly reduced resources hahave a good run but unfortunately they end up near the bottom of the division. Yet Fulham seem to buck the trend. Long may they continue.
