Boss Geraint Williams insisted that Southampton's spending power was the reason for Leyton Orient's failure to hold on to all three points in the 2-2 draw at Brisbane Road.
Centre-back Tamika Mkandawire rose to a cross by winger JJ Melligan and headed the Londoners into an almost instant lead which was later doubled by Neal Trotman's own goal.
But Rickie Lambert, a £1million summer signing from Bristol Rovers, struck twice in 10 minutes towards the end of the game to salvage a point for Saint.
"If you look at the full 90 minutes you have to say we were satisfied with a point, but having gone 2-0 up we are disappointed not to have seen it through," said Orient manager Williams.
"I thought the lads were magnificent from the first whistle to the last because we got in front nice and early and kept going to the very end.
"But at the end they were two £1million finishes. And that is what you get when you pay £1million for a striker."
