The second stage of the day was competed upon the foggy Epynt route, a high area situated near a miltary firing range which contains a few tricky corners that have been known to trap drivers in the past. Conrad Rautenbach's name was added to that list today after his Citroën Xsara went off-road, causing a slight delay while the car was moved to a safer location.
Stobart Ford's Jari-Matti Latvala has delivered a repeat of his previous great performance by claiming another stage this morning. His fastest time of 7'33"2 was three seconds quicker than that established by the Ford pair of Mikko Hirvonen and Marcus Grönholm, who tied for second place.
Another duo came next as Citroën Sport drivers Dani Sordo and Sébastien Loeb occupied positions numbers four and five, in turn followed by the two works Subarus of Petter Solberg and Chris Atkinson, who nearly set the same total running time.
Completing the interesting teammate line-up for this stage, Matthew Wilson and Henning Solberg drove into the eighth and ninth spots in the Stobart Ford team's name. Mads Ostberg's Adapta AS Subaru Impreza rounded off the top ten drivers's list for this run, 13.1 seconds down from the stage leader.
Mikko Hirvonen is the constant leader of Wales Rally GB. His advantage of 31.2 seconds over teammate Marcus Grönholm remains unchanged thanks to their identical stage times. Third-placed Sébastien Loeb continues to take things easily and drifts slightly further back to 29.7 seconds. Petter Solberg remains in fourth position while Dani Sordo moves a bit closer, although the Spaniard holds a 37.1-second deficit on the Norwegian.
Ending the day's first loop, the dual-nature Halfway 1 stage appears next on the schedule.
